Moving to 2-2 in the CNY Counties League National division, the West Genesee boys track and field team relied on its star power to beat Liverpool 81-60 last Wednesday afternoon at the Wildcats’ oval in Camillus.
Zac Karpinski led a sprint sweep, as he took the 100-meter dash in 11.5 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 22.9 seconds as Jacob Lafever (51.7 seconds) took the 400-meter dash.
Just as Jon Richardson was breaking the one-minute mark (59.7 seconds, to be exact) in the 400-meter hurdles, Karpinski, Greg Kurtz, Christos Dimkos and Jeremy Jones won the 4×100 relay in 44.6 seconds. Steve Houghmaster was second in both the mile and 800.
WG also excelled in field events, where Ben Zachariah threw the shot put 42 feet 1/2 inch, then turned around and won the triple jump, going 38 feet. Jeremy Cantello cleared 9 feet 6 inches in the pole vault as Alex Young (5 feet 10 inches) won the high jump.
Going first last Tuesday afternoon, the WG girls team could not keep up with Liverpool, taking a 95-46 loss to the Warriors.
Still, the Wildcats won two of the three relays. Bott, who broke one minute to win the 400-meter dash (59.7 seconds), teamed with Paige Copeland, Brianna McGraw and Carly Graham to take the 4×400 relay in 4:12 flat.
Graham, on her own, claimed first place in the 1,500-meter run in 4:54.7. Vanessa Mangovski won the shot put (30 feet 1 1/2 inches), then took second in the discus as Jessica Andrianos threw the discus 105 feet 5 1/2 inches.
Also, WG took the 4×800 relay, with Copeland, Colleen Smith, Amy Hannahan and Kristin Waters put up a time of 10:19.4. Copeland lost a close battle in the 400 hurdles to Liverpool’s Trina Bills, 1:07.4 to 1:07.6,
