As it hit the midway point of its regular-season slate, the Westhill boys basketball team made sure it had the neighborhood bragging rights secure. Hosting Solvay last Wednesday night, the Warriors played a near-perfect first quarter and cruised to a 79-40 victory over the Bearcats. A continual string of baskets allowed the Warriors to get far away real fast. By the end of those first eight minutes, it was 30-4, and while Solvay would settle down, the main damage had been rendered. Dan Ross pushed his way to 24 points, with Dan Karleski (12 points) and Tom Fisher (10 points) also hitting double figures. Mike McMullen had eight points, with Justin Biles adding six points. Nate Nigolian, Cory Hewitt and J.T. Alcaro each had five points. For the Bearcats, Dan Aiello, with 15 points, and Andrew Lucio, with 11 points, accounted for much of the offense, with Devanere Surrey earning six points. Just before the Westhill game, Solvay had to go to Hannibal last Monday night, and it never got close in a 71-35 loss to those other Warriors. From the time Hannibal roared out to a 20-5 first-quarter lead, the outcome was settled, and the margin grew to 63-29 by the time the third quarter was done. Aiello finished with eight points, as Lucio got seven points and T.J. Fazio earned six points. Derrick Shoults, with 13 points, led a balanced Warrior offense where Tyler Baker and Brenden Nollet each had 11 points.
