Even with the records they possessed, the Oneida and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill girls basketball teams knew the importance of their annual showdowns. So both sides played hard in last Tuesday’s game, and it stayed close for a while. But the Indians took over in the second half and pulled away to beat the Red Devils 59-30. Oneida did grab the lead quickly, going up 15-9 in the first quarter. Still, VVS didn’t surrender right away, as Erin Curtis (seven points), Tracy Schiebel and Nikki Schiebel (six points each) helped the Red Devils stay within six, 27-21, at the break. From there, though, the Indians started to click on both ends, stifling VVS on defense and getting baskets on the other end as part of a 21-4 third-quarter outburst that settled matters. Beth Kann, with 15 points, led this surge, with lots of help. Courtney Casler finished with eight points, while Mackenzie Lynch earned seven points and Erika Newton got six points. Each of the 10 Oneida players that saw game action got at least one point. Oneida improved to 2-10 on the season, the same record VVS now holds.
