Paced by the multiple victories of Marshay Zamlowski and Michelle Brandt, the Chittenango girls indoor track and field team came home from Manley Field House last Monday night with the Section III Class A championship banner.
Overall, the Bears finished with 114 points, prevailing by a comfortable margin over New Hartford, who got second place with 92 points. Jamesville-DeWitt, in third place with 85 points, was the only other team in the field of nine close to Chittenango’s output.
Zamlowski began her big night in the 55-meter dash, going 7.74 seconds to edge past Fowler’s Asia Whitehead (7.80 seconds) for the title.
Moving on to the long jump, Zamlowski dominated with a leap of 16 feet 6 inches that beat the Class A field by more than a foot. She prevailed by an even bigger margin in the triple jump, going 34 feet 8 1/2 inches, nearly two feet better than New Hartford’s Emma Loe.
Brandt prevailed in the two longest races of the night. At 3,000 meters, she finished with a time of 10:31.41, nearly 14 seconds clear of J-D’s Eileen Cody, while also tearing through the 1,500-meter run in 4:58.20, the only Class A athlete to break the five-minute mark.
To cap off her big night, Brandt joined Bethany Macera, Jordan Donnelly and Kelly Anderson to win the 4×800 relay in 10:31.77 over East Syracuse-Minoa (10:34.44), who was second. Jessica Darling also sneaked into the win column, taking the shot put with a toss of 28 feet 2 inches.
Chittenango also got second place in the 4×400 relay (4:28.61) and third in the 4×200 relay (1:57.69) as Alyssa Giarosso, Kristina Gorden, Christine Stoddard and Kailey Krause all took part.
Kristina Karbowniczak got second place in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 8 inches, one inch less than J-D’s Natalie Mannion. Macera returned to take third place in the 600-meter run in 1:49.35, as Donnelly finished fourth in the 3,000 (11:46.94) and Jenny Maum was fifth in the 1,000-meter run in 3:43.57.
All the boys Section III championships are set for Wednesday night, also at Manley.
