Having waited all spring for the showdown, Cicero-North Syracuse’s girls track and field team was eager to clash with Fayetteville-Manilus.
The two collided at last Thursday’s Section III Class AA championship meet at Rome Free Academy Stadium. And just like on the boys side 24 hours earlier, the Northstars would come out on top of the Hornets.
All told, CNS had 153 points, earning a solid winning margin over F-M, who was second with 116 points. The host team from RFA (76 points) edged past Baldwinsville (73.5 points) for third place.
From an individual standpoint, no one could touch Kerriann Borke. All the senior did was claim three titles, staring in the 100-meter high hurdles, where she flew through the field in 15 seconds flat.
Not stopping there, Borke moved on to the long jump, where she flew 17 feet, nearly half a foot ahead of the field. And in the triple jump, Borke went 37 feet 8 1/4 inches for her third victory of the meet.
Backing all this up, Sommer Cloinger earned her usual sweep of the throwing events, unleashing a top shot put toss of 42 feet 5 3/4 inches, then moving on to the discus, where she threw it 110 feet 6 inches to win that title, too.
Monique Roberts hit her stride in the high jump, soaring past 5 feet 8 inches as part of a 1-2 sweep where Gina Campagna (5 feet 1 inch) took second place. McKaye Neumeister won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.34, and was also third in the 400-meter dash (1:00.64) and third in the triple jump (35 feet 7 3/4 inches) behind Neumeister.
In distance running, F-M dominated, but Lindsay Raulli still finished second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 7:38.07, and she was also fifth in the 1,500-meter dash (4:56.12), just ahead of Taylor Wendler (5:00.4).
Wendler, for her part, got fourth place in the 3,000-meter run (10:57.38) as Alicia Finger finished sixth (11:01.57). Eighth-grader Rachel Bowles earned third place in the 400 hurdles (1:05.95) and added a sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.92). Alana Hotchkiss earned 2,135 points for second place in the penathlon as Tiffany Elderbroom (1,706 points) finished fifth.
Steady in the relays, CNS finished second in the 4×800 in 9:53.53, and was third in both the 4×100 (51.25 seconds) and 4×400 (4:06.55). Neumeister, Bowles, Roberts, Borke, Finger, Lauren Slocum, Alicia Greco, Mallory Greenseich, Janise Harper, Brittany Capsello and Jasmine Thompson (who was fifth in the 100 hurdles) all took part.
