Amid a deep and competitive field, the Jordan-Elbridge girls track and field team battled its way to a second-place finish at last Tuesday’s OHSL Liberty division championship meet at CBA’s Alibrandi Stadium.
The Eagles finished with 93 points, just ahead of third-place Westhill (85 points), as Skaneateles came out on top with 120 points.
In all, J-E won five events, and five different athletes got those wins, starting with Catie White, who took the 1,500-meter run in 5:08.2 as Nicole Darling prevailed in the 3,000-meter run in 11:41.7.
The Eagles also won three different field events. Katie Darling took first in the long jump with 15 feet 11 inches, and was second in the triple jump (31 feet 8 inches) as teammate Libby Forward won with 32 feet 6 inches. Lisa Kimak won the high jump by clearing 4 feet 8 inches with fewer misses than Westhill’s Emily Owen.
Forward also earned second place in the 800-meter run (2:27.8), as Kimak got fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles (18.6 seconds) and Lyndsay Hollis earned fourth place in both the long jump (15 feet) and 200-meter dash (27.2 seconds).
Westhill’s Owen overcame her high-jump disappointment by winning the 800-meter run in a time of 2:23.4, more than four seconds ahead of Forward. She also teamed with Brittany Pelsue, Emily Ondrejka and Abby Lee to take the 4×400 relay in 4:14.8.
Lee earned her own crown in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.8 seconds, as Ondrejka finished a close second at 400 meters (1:01.2) to Skaneateles’ Julie Dmochowski (1:00.9). Crystal Whiteside got second place at 3,000 meters in 11:52.3.
Elena Mangano cleared 8 feet 6 inches in the pole vault, but watched CBA’s Kristen Fekete clear 10 feet to prevail. Katie Christenson got third in the high jump (4 feet 6 inches) as Brittany Conway got fourth (8 feet) in the pole vault.
Solvay had 30 points in the meet, a third of them from Christine Armstrong, who won the five-event pentathlon with 1,940 points, 137 ahead of Skaneateles’ Eileen Ford.
Also for the Bearcats, Brianna Lioto finished second in the 100-meter high hurdles (18.2 seconds), as Jessica Goodrich took fourth in the 1,500 (5:19.2) and Rebecca Balduzzi got fifth in the 100-meter dash in 13 seconds flat.
