Any time someone has tried to post a challenge to the West Genesee boys lacrosse team’s supremacy, that challenge has been met with ferocity.
Such was the case, again, in last Tuesday’s battle with Baldwinsville, where a perfect start and stiff resistance helped produce a 10-4 victory over the Bees.
They had met earlier in the month, on April 3, with WG prevailing 14-10. The closeness of that game caused some concern, but in the rematch, B’ville never would get as close.
Throughout the first quarter, B’ville was on its heels. It took just 0 seconds for Luke Cometti to score, barely two more minutes to make it 2-0 as Joe Pompo found the net, and it continued until the Wildcats possessed a 5-0 advantage.
Tim Desko and Aaron Printup dominated the faceoffs, leading to multiple chances. Desko converted midway through the quarter, and Collin Donahue capped the runs with back-to-back goals.
And though it didn’t sustain that kind of pace for the rest of the night, WG stayed well out in front because its defense made it miserable for B’ville’s potent attack.
All night long, Jared Casey shadowed Jack Venditti, holding him to one goal and one assist, and Chris Aubertine did the same strong work on Jeremy Boltus. Combined, they took the Bees’ two most dangerous players out of their rhythm.
Still, B’ville had its share of opportunities, which was where John Galloway entered the picture. Anything weak, or close to the net, and Galloway would swallow it up with his stick or body, finishing the night with 21 saves.
WG is home again Saturday, against Corcoran, looking to improve to 11-0 on the season.
