Before anyone else in the Onondaga High School League, the East Syracuse-Minoa track and field teams initiated league meets. The Spartans did so last Tuesday afternoon, sneaking in a contest with Homer before the weather turned worse. And ESM enjoyed it, winning 112-29 on the boys side and 87-54 on the girls side. In the boys event, Arnes Hadzic won three times, following up a 100-meter dash title (11.6 seconds) by posting the top long jump of 17 feet 11 1/2 inches and the top triple jump of 36 feet 10 1/2 inches. Adam Groesbeck added two titles of his own, running the 400-meter dash in 53 seconds flat and covering 200 meters in 23.7 seconds. Groesbeck, Hadzic, Darin Coplin and Zaid Jinadu combined to take the 4×100 relay in 46.7 seconds. Zach Johnson swept to titles in the 110-meter high hurdles (17.8 seconds) and 400-meter hurdles (1:04.1) and was also in the 4×400 relay (4:38.7) with Jinadu, Groesbeck and Christian Larrabee. Elsewhere, Jeff Sweeney swept the distance races, covering the mile in 5:05.7 and 3,200 meters in 10:52.54. Josh Haas (pole vault), Dave Mattheis (shot put) and Greg Lothridge (high jump) also prevailed, with Peter Ferstler, Nick Sadlocha, Craig Andrianos and Nate LaPierre combining to take the 4×800 relay in 9:18 flat. Points were not as easy to find in the girls meet, but ESM still came out on top.
Lean Andrianos won four different times. She took the 200 (28.2 seconds) and 400 (1:02.4), and moved on to run 1,500 meters in 5:35 and grab the 800 in 2:37.3. Rachel Bennett was victorious in the 100-meter high hurdles (18.8 seconds) as Asisat Adebola won the 100-meter dash in 13.8 seconds. Adebola, Bennett, Jillian Mitchell and Brittany Kadmus teamed up to take the 4×100 relay in 55.7 seconds. In field events, Adebola took first in the shot put (30 feet 3 inches), displaying her versatility as Meghan Visser (pole vault), Kara LaBarge (triple jump) and Brandi Gibson (high jump, 4 feet 8 inches) all snagged titles, too.
