Both the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa boys indoor track and field teams would claim honors during Thursday’s Salt City Athletic Conference Empire division championships at SRC Arena.
The Red Rams ran away with the team title, earning 190 points, while the Spartns, who finished second with 92 points, had plenty of its own individual standouts.
James Richer, with a shot put toss of 43 feet 8 inches, beat out ESM’s Logan Cowell (40’1”) as Ben Staples was third with 39’1 1/4” and the Spartans’ Kevin Hasty was fourth with 38’11 3/4”.
Moving to the weight throw, J-D went 1-2, Richer needing 43’3” to hold off Staples’ 42’7”, while Hasty was fourth with 40’11” and Cowell fifth with 38’7”.
Caleb Smith was victorious in the long jump, going 20′ 3/4”, also finishing third in the triple jump with 38’2 1/2” ahead of teammate Aniket Maini in fourth place. In the high jump, Nick Dekaney, clearing 5’10”, beat out Smith’s 5’8”.
Joe Staples went 6.80 seconds to edge PSLA-Fowler’s Lexus Ruiz-Southward (6.82) in the 55-meter dash, with Josh Duby third in 6.98 seconds before Duby won the 300-meter dash in 37.25 seconds, Haberle Conlon (38.52) taking third.
Together, Staples, Duby, Conlon and Nick Dekaney went 1:35.66 to win the 4×200 relay, chased by, among others, ESM, who was third in 1:41.46.
Also, J-D won the 4×800 relay as Sam Smith, Jacob Cottet, Ahviere Reese and Kaleel Boykins went 8:50.84. Renaldo Colon had a second-place time of 1:32.71 in the 600-meter run, with Reese second (4:51.17) and Cottet fourth (4:56.04) in the 1,600-meter run. Smith cleared 9’6” for second place in the pole vault.
ESM had Nick Berg emerge victorious at 3,200 meters in 10:06.28 over Boykins (10:38.29) and Nate Rindfuss (10:40.29), who claimed the next two spots.
Berg then beat the field in the 1,000-meter run in 2:45.21, with Smith second in 2:48.58 and Brian Hulbert fourth in 2:53.05 for the Rams.
Michael Parks, in the 55-meter hurdles, edged J-D’s Nick Dekaney, 8.05 seconds to 8.09, while Rocky El won the triple jump with 39’11 1/2” ahead of Smith ( Parks was third in the long jump with 18’8” as Sean Murray was fifth with 16’9 3/4”.
The Spartans were third in the 4×400 relay in 3:53.32 ahead of J-D (3:55.76) in fourth place, adding a fifth in the 4×800. Bennett Ferrari finished third in the pole vault, also clearing 9’6”.
In the girls SCAC Empire meet, J-D had 100.5 points, second to Central Square’s winning total of 157 points as ESM was fourth with 63 points.
To lead the Rams, Rainer Yaeger swept the jumping events, recording a top long jump of 16′ 1/4” and then, in the triple jump, winning it with 34’2 1/2”. Laeticcia Bazile cleared 5’1” to win the high jump.
Monica Hernandez got second place in the 55 hurdles in 9.46 seconds as Laeticcia Bazile (9.86) was fourth. But that pair was victorious in the 4×200, joined by Yaeger and Janna VanVraken to post 1:54.89.
Grace Bridge, Theresa Grosso, Kyra Schultz and Madeline Carter were second in the 4×400 in 4:37 flat, with Rebecca Kassiss, Kyra Schultz, Kathryn Sizing and Jillian Kordas second in the 4×800 in 11:44.18.
Bridge took second in the 60 in 1:48.97, with Rebecca Kassis fourth and Kathryn Sizing sixth in the 1,000. Eva Wisniewski was third in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet as Lucy Heflin was fifth. VanVraken got fourth place in the 300, with Carter sixth as Kordas was fifth in the 1,500-meter run.
ESM had Rylie King win the 55 sprint in 7.89 seconds, with Kaleigh Maloof third in 8.01 seconds to go with a third in the triple jump (31’3”) and sixth in the 55 hurdles, King finishing fifth in the 300.
Rhiannaon Butchko was second in the high jump, topping 4’10” as Arianna Brennan (4’8”) was fourth. King, Butchko, Hannah Kowanes and Lilia Pena were second in the 4×200 in 2:00.32.
Rachael Ladd took third in the 3,000-meter run in 11:22.83, with J-D’s Madeline Foss fourth. Ladd added a fourth in the 1,500, with Mary Roach sixth as the Spartans took fourth in the 4×400. Emelia Richardson was sixth in the long jump.
