Over the years, the Cazenovia field hockey team has enjoyed some fine battles with Weedsport, the two of them always among the top sides in the Onondaga High School League.
And it was no different Tuesday afternoon at Burton Street Elementary, where the Lakers and Warriors battled for 60 minutes in regulation and 10 more minutes in overtime, but resolved nothing in a 1-1 draw.
Each of the goals came in the first half. Cazenovia got on the board when sophomore Sammy Sparks converted for the first time this season, unassisted.
Weedsport’s goal also came from a sophomore, Christina Jackson converting off a feed from Erin Grady, and from there the two sides furiously battled the rest of the afternoon trying to resolve it.
The Lakers had far more opportunities, but ran into a tremendous performance from Warriors goalie Mariah Quigley, who turned back 12 of 13 shots. For her part, Cazenovia goalie Mackenzie Halliday had four saves.
Now with a 3-2-1 record, Cazenovia is home again next Wednesday to face Cato-Meridian before going to Camden’s annual tournament, where it will meet Afton/Harpursville in the first round on Sept. 27 before taking on Camden or Vestal a day later.
