To the editor:
On behalf of the board of directors of Fit to Be Tied, we would like to thank all of the runners, walkers and volunteers who participated in our Third Annual Fit to Be Tied race/walk for Amyloidosis on May 20. With their support, we raised $6750 for Amyloidosis research at the Boston Medical Center’s Amyloidosis Research Center! Over the past three years, we have raised more than $23,250, which has gone directly to Boston University’s Amyloidosis Research Center.
We couldn’t have held our event without the incredible support from local merchants and businesses. We are so grateful to Ballantyne Gardens, Custom Logo USA, Elevate Fitness, Fleet Feet, Jim’s Service Center, Lamar Advertising, Nichols Supermarket, Northbound Coaching and Consulting, Spaghetti Warehouse, The Richard S. Shineman Foundation and Stones Throw Farm. We also appreciate all the help and assistance the Onondaga Lake Park staff has given us for the past three years.
At our event this year, we were so pleased to bring together four Central New York families who have a relative that is living with Amyloidosis. We also connected people who have had a family member who has died from this disease.
Amyloidosis is a very rare bone marrow disease that took the life of Bob Palmer, a local school psychologist who wore silly ties to school every day. Bob died at the age of 65 in October 2015 while undergoing treatment at Boston Medical Center’s Amyloidosis Center. Fit to Be Tied remembers Bob’s silly ties but also acknowledges our frustration with the difficulty of diagnosing Amyloidosis quickly and finding a cure for this disease. We are Fit to Be Tied!
Thanks again for everyone’s support, and we hope to see you at the fourth annual Fit to Be Tied event May 19, 2019!
