When it heads into the heart of its Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division slate, the Baldwinsville girls basketball team will do so undefeated and determined to prove it can challenge for both league and, eventually, sectional titles.
The Bees were 5-0 following its weekend sweep of an eastern road trip to Lansingburgh and Troy, and even with two days of practice lost to winter weather, it didn’t lose any of its momentum.
The SCAC Metro opener last Thursday night sent the Bees to Henninger, who had started 2-2. And much of the game was played on even terms, with B’ville’s quick start the primary difference in a 57-45 victory.
With pressure on one end and solid execution on the other end, the Bees jumped on Henninger and led 19-7 after one quarter. Maintaining that margin, B’ville eventually built its edge to 44-27, more than enough to withstand the Black Knights’ late push.
Alena Criss, with seven field goals and six successful free throws, led B’ville with 20 points. Katie Pascale was close behind, pouring in 16 points, while Jenna Costello had 10 points.
Henninger did provide a well-balanced attack, led by Nijihonna McDaniel, who gained 14 points and seven rebounds. Josea Sanjurjo and Tanyea Jansson each had 10 points, with Shynia Chandler adding seven points and seven rebounds.
This gears up B’ville for this Friday’s showdown with defending sectional Class AA champion West Genesee in Camillus, which follows Tuesday’s home game against Corcoran.
