When Common Grounds first opened in the late 90s, open mic nights and chess clubs were regular features. As a result of renewed interest, these opportunities for community members of all ages to enjoy will be returning.
Spearheaded by Cazenovia High School junior Jacob Fraser-Gilbert, open mic night welcomes original performance of live music, poetry, comedy or any other genre.
“People of all ages are invited to participate as performers and audience members,” said Fraser-Gilbert. “Whether you are a high school or college student or someone looking to dust off that instrument you haven’t picked up in a while, please join us.”
Open mics will take place at 7 p.m. on the last Friday of each month, with Friday, April 28, as the debut of the new series. Registration to perform can be found online at cazenovia.recdesk.com/Community/Program.
As a kick-off to a new weekly chess club, Syracuse Chess Club Anton Ninno will present a “Learn to Play Chess” workshop at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26.
“Players of all age and skill level are invited to attend the workshop and learn about the opportunity to begin a local club,” said Kelli Johnson, community organizer at Common Grounds.
