For the second time in September, the Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt boys volleyball teams encountered each other, with the same result at the first meeting.
Unlike their Sept. 10 meeting, the Red Rams were not swept, going out in front by winning a close first set 25-23. But the Hornets controlled the second set 25-15 and then took a crucial third set 25-21 before closing it out in the fourth set, again by a 25-15 margin.
With his 31 assists, Christopher Perry fed it to a well-balanced front line. Jacob Rhea had 12 kills, four blocks and three digs, while Cade Collum had 11 kills, three blocks and two aces. Ryan Boshart got nine kills, six digs and two assists as Dean Assenza (seven digs), Jack Fuller (three kills, five digs) and Jack Grifo (four digs, two aces, two kills) helped out.
J-D had plenty of defensive standouts, including Ryan Middleton, who amassed 19 digs to go with 10 kills. Lucas Binder had 12 digs and seven kills as Owen Fartioni got 11 digs and Dan Thompson six digs. Liam Kaplan earned 25 assists. Cameron Howe got five kills and three digs.
Just before this, J-D got into the win column Sept. 24 with a 25-22, 25-13, 25-19 sweep of Living Word Academy. Amassing 35 assists, Kaplan fed it to Binder, who got 17 kills and 11 digs, with Nick Mandelis getting 11 kills, four blocks, three aces and 10 digs. Fartioni had six digs and Dhruv Thota three digs.
Each team played again Thursday night – F-M against the Syracuse City team at Nottingham High School, J-D at Central Square.
The Hornets swept Syracuse 25-10, 25-18, 25-15 as Andrew Siuda earned 16 assists to give Perry some rest. Rhea had six kills, with Fuller, Philip Brady, Nick Harlander, Brian Jones and Ryan Kaczorowski each getting three kills. Boshart and Kevin Ziobrowski both earned a pair of aces.
Against Central Square, J-D lost the first two sets 25-21 and 25-16 and, while extending it by taking the third set 25-22, could not keep the Redhawks from a 25-14 romp in the fourth set to end matters. Middleton had seven kills and three assists, while Kaplan produced 12 assists. Dhruv Thota had four kills and two blocks.
Jamesville-DeWitt’s girls volleyball team lost a five-set thriller to Cazenovia last Tuesday, falling to 7-2 on the season. After a 25-17 loss in the first set, the Red Rams won the second 25-21 and pulled out a 26-24 thriller in the third, only to have the Lakers make its own comeback and win the fourth and fifth sets by equal 25-19 margins.
Alexandria Payne still had 16 kills and 11 digs, with Alex Frank piling up 18 digs to go with 12 kills. Lexie Gambacorto had nine kills and 11 digs as Amy Shen contributed seven kills, four blocks and six digs. Julia Cavanaugh managed five kills and six digs as Eva Dougherty picked up 24 assists and 13 digs. Madeline Ferris got 10 digs.
On Cazenovia’s side, Lauren Lyons set a career mark with 40 assists, helped on the back line with 20 digs from Lauren Burbidge, 10 digs from Maleigha Ellithorpe and nine digs from Sarah Dickinson. Danielle Tedesco amassed 18 kills and seven digs, with Molly Carges earning 15 kills, 11 digs, five blocks and three aces. Morgan Hodinger managed to earn 16 digs to go with her seven kills.
It was the turn of the Fayetteville-Manlius girls to run into the Baldwinsville machine last Monday night, and it lost, 25-15, 25-25, 25-7 to the Bees. Despite this, Saara Vahtola had seven kills, with Jessica Burhle and Paige Hulbert each earning six kills. Erianna Madill had 19 assists and matched Hulbert’s total of seven digs.
Turning it around on Wednesday, the Hornets swept Nottingham 25-10, 25-4, 25-11. Nine different players combined for 24 aces, with Vahtola getting six of them and Ellen Burhle adding five aces to go with six kills. Jesssica Buhrle got five kills and three aces as Madill put up three aces, too, along with 14 assists.
Then, in Friday’s match against Cicero-North Syracuse, F-M pulled out a massive comeback, losing the first two sets 25-19 and 25-16, but then turning it around by pulling out the third and fourth sets by equal 25-21 margins and then claiming the final set 25-22 for one of its best wins of the season.
Madill needed 44 assists to feed it to Vahtola, who had 20 kills and 10 digs, and Hulbert, who had 14 kills and 13 digs. Jessica Buhrle notched six kills and Alexandra Buhrle had five kills, plus four blocks. Ellen Burhle added eight digs as Jessica Barry led C-NS with 19 assists, seven aces, seven kills, nine digs and three blocks.
Bishop Grimes took Auburn to five sets last Monday night. Twice, the Cobras fell behind, dropping the first set 25-16 and the third 25-11, but twice it got back even, pulling out the second set 25-21 and the fourth 25-22, though the Maroons prevailed, 25-19, in the final set.
Tired from this battle, Grimes lost in three sets to Hannibal 25-20, 25-12, 25-11 a night later. Raquel McDonald still had six kills, with Bri Squier, Kendall Mancuso and Sarah Snavlin getting three kills apiece. Samantha Houck had 11 assists, four aces and three digs as Mancuso and Maria Canzano had six digs apiece.
Against Homer on Thursday night, Grimes was competitive, but still lost, 25-23, 25-13, 25-21, to the Trojans. Houck had 13 assists and Canzano seven digs, with McDonald earning four kills as Squier and Snavlin each earning three kills. Mancuso and Becca Vinciquerra both earned four digs, matching Squier’s total.
