Throughout this compact fall season, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis team again proved that, when it played CNY Counties League foes, most of them just tumbled in the Hornets’ presence.
West Genesee should have enjoyed some familiarity with this phenomenon, given that just six days passed between their Sept. 20 encounter and the rematch in Camillus last Monday afternoon.
Familiarity doesn’t always translate into results, though, and the Hornets earned another 7-0 victory over the Wildcats, pushed only in doubles, where Katerina Atallah and Patrice Calancie overcame a terrible second set to beat Mikayla Mannara and Meghan Mello 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.
Diana Polovick and Kristina Liu won, 6-4, 6-4, over Lauren Ferris and Anastasia Mello, while Martha Welker and Gretchen Ayoub handled Phoebe Nelson and Angelina Llanos 6-2, 6-3. Anna Charlamb and Rachel Liu had a 6-3, 6-0 sweep over Camryn Chawgo and Sara Church.
Anna Manta got it going in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 romp over Thi Tran. Neither of the other matches was close, either, Keara Polovick handling Danielle Bertelli 6-1, 6-1 and Maggie Bonomo, in first singles, romping past Andrea Wierbinski 6-0, 6-2.
A tougher test was expected Wednesday at Baldwinsville against a Bees side F-M handled 6-1 on Sept. 12. But the rematch turned into a 7-0 Hornets shutout that completed a perfect 14-0 blitz through the regular season.
The closest B’ville came to even earning a set came in first doubles, where Jennifer Stone and Brooke Tutor paired up and got a second-set tie-breaker, but Attalah and Calancie still won 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Diana Polovick and Kristina Liu paired up to beat Paige Tromblee and Lauren Devine 6-4, 6-1, while Welker and Maddy Drapeau took out Katherine Cassidy and Gabby Fiello 6-1, 6-0. Charlamb and Rachel Lius had a 6-1, 6-1 win over Yasha Parawar and Riley Warren.
Moving to the singles side, Bonomo did not let B’ville’s Amanda Coogan snare a point in a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Meanwhile, Keara Polovick defeated Alina Minkova 6-3, 6-2, and Manta had a 6-1, 6-2 win over Taylor Collado.
Manlius-Pebble Hill started the week by blanking Pulaski 7-0, which included matching 6-0, 6-0 singles shutouts by Parmees Fazeli and Annie Weiss over, respectively, Andrea Geer and Sarah McCray. Louisa Morrow nearly matched them, but still got a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jennifer Lapp.
In the closest of the four doubles matches, the Trojans’ team of Genevieve Morrow and Lily Grenis won, 6-1, 7-5, over Cerenity Geer and Delilah Mehallow. The teams of Hannah Ebner-Amina Kilpatrick, Halle Erwin-Meg Curtis and Sara Antonevich-Vinian Lee all got their own straight-set victories.
A day later, against Skaneateles, the Trojans stepped up in a big way and defeated the Lakers 5-2, sparked by two wins in three singles matches. Annie Weiss beat Alex Ditch 7-6, 6-1, while Grace Walsh routed Mary McNeil 6-0, 6-2 as Louisa Morrow lost, 6-3, 6-1, to Erica Byrne.
Doubles matches proved pivotal, three of them going to three sets and MPH claiming two of them. Curtis, paired with Fazelli, were two games from defeat, but rallied to beat Isabella Kroon and Hope Glowacki 2-6, 7-5, 10-1, just as Grenis and Genevieve Morrow outlasted Hope Allyn and Lily Datz 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Skaneateles had just defeated Bishop Grimes 5-2 the day before, breaking through in singles when Liz Wolaver beat Erica Byrne 6-3, 6-3 and Rachel Christie had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mary McNeil.
Katie Knittel, going for the singles sweep, took a 7-5, 7-5 defeat to Alex Ditch, and the Cobras had to forfeit two doubles matches, dropping the other two in straight sets as Mary Castricone and Gina Martin fell to Angela Krause and Rachel Feeney 6-2, 6-0, with Olivia Minor and Michela Marturano taking a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Lily Datz and Hope Allyn.
East Syracuse Minoa had a 4-2 defeat to Central Square last Monday afternoon, getting points when, in singles, Kim Pham romped past Julia Georges 6-1, 6-0 and Shejia Hujdur got past Victoria Tyrrell 6-2, 6-4. But the Redhawks won the rest of the matches in straight sets, the closest of them in doubles, where Natalie Binion and Amber Unislawski fell to Maddie Haley and Savannah Todd 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
The Spartans could not get on the board in a 7-0 loss to Auburn a day later, Pham struggling against Maroons singles star Julia Wagner in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat. One of the doubles matches proved close, though Binion and Unislawski couldn’t quite get on the board in a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 defeat to Sydney Whitney and Samantha Lesch.
