Girls tennis Warriors top Marcellus

Neighbors Westhill and Marcellus gathered on Sept. 2 for a girls tennis showdown in the OHSL Liberty division, but it was the Warriors getting the best of it, claiming all three singles matches and defeating the Mustangs 6-1.

Kaleigh Danaher played two close sets in singles against Marcy Gosson, but pulled it out 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. Katherine Missert had an easier time of it, though, beating Courtney Otis 6-0, 6-1 as Giovanna Buccina defeated Caroline Keegan 6-0, 6-2.

Marcellus got on the board in doubles when Abby Vetsch and Maddie Conklin got a 6-2, 6-3 win over Abbey Mullen and Lydia Stevenson. Katie and Grace Lesselroth answered for Westhill, beating Grace Vensel and Anna Canny 6-1, 6-4, while Elizabeth Megnucci and Madelyn Sherlock shut out Alyssa Goodwin and Allison Clancy 6-0, 6-0. Cami Cortez and Zoe Hynes topped Linn and Sydney Spanfeler 6-4, 6-1.

Westhill went from there to defeating Phoenix 5-2 last Wednesday afternoon. The Lesselroths capped a doubles sweep by taking a 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 7-5 decision over Molly Thorn and Bryn Demong, while the teams of Sherlock-Megnucci and Hynes-Cortez also prevailed. Danaher notched the lone singles point by beating Catherine Musumeci 6-4, 6-4.

West Genesee was undefeated until its Sept. 2 match against Baldwinsville, where it only managed one singles and one doubles point, far from enough in a 5-2 loss to the Bees.

Mikayla Mannara survived a first-set tie-breaker and pulled away from Jennifer Stone 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, but Andrea Andreeva did not earn a game in a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Brooke Tutor as Danielle Bertelli fell to Paige Tromblee 6-3, 6-1.

Among the doubles matches, Anastasia Mello and Phoebe Nelson rallied from a brutal start to beat Yasha Parawar and Riley Warren 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, but in another three-set battle Meghan Mello and Andrea Wierbinski lost, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, to Amanda Coogan and Lauren Divine.

Lauren Ferris paired up with Natalie Thurston, but they lost to Alina Minkova and Taylor Collado 6-3, 6-4, while Angelina Llanos and Katie Viau ran into Gabby Fiello and Katherine Cassidy and took a 6-2, 6-3 loss.

WG turned it around last Tuesday, defeating Cicero-North Syracuse by that same 5-2 margin. Mannara dominated Madison Murphy, 6-0, 6-0, while Wierbinski did the same against Hanna Costello 6-1, 6-0 as Andreeva lost to Ava Breitbeck 6-4, 6-0.

Moving to doubles, Llanos and Anastasia Mello rallied to beat Jenna Wilson and Karrah Savage 2-6, 6-0, 7-5. Ferris paired with Viau for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sarah Wicks and Sarah Cooper, with Nelson and Bertelli teaming up to beat Sydney Franco and Vanessa Luangaphay in another 6-3, 6-3 decision.

Jordan-Elbridge took a 4-2 defeat to Phoenix on Sept. 2. In doubles, Marissa Malvaso and Theresa Malvaso won a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Lauren Schmidt and Elissa Fordyce, with Stevenson and Stephanie Bigness defeating Larissa Semanchuk-Enser and Marissa Moore 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

Abbey Karlik and Madi Hatt lost in three sets to Molly Thorn and Bryn Demong, unable to hold on to an early lead in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision. Up in singles, Amelia Younis fell to Brielle DeRoberts 6-4, 6-0, while Miranda Malvaso had a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Brielle DeRoberts.

Against undefeated, defending Section III Class C champion Cazenovia last Tuesday, the Eagles could not gain a point in a 7-0 defeat. Karlik had the closest singles match, but lost to Lucy Langan 6-2, 6-0 as Kayla Corgnell fell to Julia Barrett 6-0, 6-0 as Younis ran into Alex Galle in a 6-1, 6-0 loss.

Marcellus took its shot at Cazenovia Wednesday and lost, 6-1, to the Lakers, rescuing a point when Vetsch and Conklin roared past Laura and Lucy Connor 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Another doubles match went to three sets, but Canny and Goodwin lost, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, to Julie Silverman and Abby Burrell. Cazenovia won every singles match in straight sets.

As that went on, J-E got into the win column, roaring past Pulaski 7-0. Corgnell had to overcome a bad start to top Andrea Geer 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, while Younis beat Delilah Mehallow 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) and Miranda Malvaso routed Jennifer Lapp 6-0, 6-0. Each of the doubles matches was also won in two sets.

Amid Friday’s busy action, Marcellus won, 4-3, over Bishop Grimes, while J-E fell to Skaneateles 6-1, its only point coming in doubles, where the Malvaso sisters claimed a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Angela Krause and Meg McNeil.

West Genesee won a 6-1 non-league match over East Syracuse Minoa as Westhill could not get on the board against defending Section III Class C champion Cazenovia in a 7-0 defeat, seeing the doubles teams of Hynes-Cortez and Missert-Mullen both lose in three sets.
