Onondaga — When the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team lined up for the first time this winter against members of the CNY Indoor Track Association, it proved quite successful.
The Lakers emerged as champions of last Wednesday night’s Onondaga High School League Division 2 meet at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, earning 119 points to fend off Westhill-Bishop Ludden (107 points) for that top spot as Skaneateles finished third with 78 points.
Meggie Hart got Cazenovia going when she claimed the 3,000-meter run in 10 minutes, 51.50 seconds, while Adrien Owens (12:30.10) finished sixth. Also, in the 4×800 relay, Hart, joined by Clara Rowles, Megan Henderson and Maria Stalder, won in 10:26.38, topping Westhill-Ludden (10:36.49) by more than 10 seconds.
Rowles, who was a close second (3:14.77) to Westhill-Ludden’s Genny Corcoran (3:13.70) in the 1,000-meter run, would prevail at 1,500 meters in 5:02.63 to Corcoran’s 5:05.28, Henderson got fourth place in the 1,000 in 3:17.39 and Zoe Shephard was sixth (5:24.80) in the 1,500.
Stalder, Olivia McEntee, Katrina Wilson and Grace Rajkowski were second in the 4×400 relay in 4:29.81, this before McEntee, joined by Brenna Hughes, Jamie Kempf and Delaney Yates, finished second (1:58.17) to Westhill-Ludden (1:56.87) in the 4×200 relay, where Chittenango was fifth in 2:06.34.
Kirsten Underwood, in 7.72 seconds, was runner-up to CBA’s Kiana Ferguson (7.63 seconds) in the 55-meter dash. Stalder also got fourth place in the 600-meter run in 1:47.55, ahead of Hart (1:49.31) in fifth place, while McEntee took fourth in the 300-meter dash in 45.24 seconds. Yates took fifth place in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.84 seconds.
In field events, Maddy Gavitt gave Cazenovia a second-place long jump of 15 feet 7 ½ inches and was third (32’2 ¼”) in the triple jump. Katie Robbins, in the pole vault, cleared 8 feet, taking second place to Westhill-Ludden’a Katherine Doherty (10’3”) as Gavitt (7’6”) was third.
continued — Ryleigh Tillison rose to third place in the shot put with a throw of 27’3 ¼”, while Tori Fischer (26’5 ¼”) was fifth. In the high jump, Fischer cleared 4’8” for fifth place, with Jess Macheda (4’6”) in sixth place.
Chittenango was seventh with 19 points, many of them from McKenzie Dombroski finishing third (11;31.05) and Devin Gordon fifth (12:20.04) in the 3,000 behind Hart. The Bears were also sixth in the 4×400 in 5:02.37 as Krissy Roberts took third in the long jump (15’3”) and sixth in the triple jump (31’3”), and Kaitlyn Swain took sixth in the 600 in 1:50.64.
Meanwhile, in the boys OHSL Division 2 meet, Chittenango, with 43 points, finished fourth, ahead of Cazenovia (33.5 points) in seventh place, though they all chased Westhill-Ludden, who got the top spot with 114.5 points.
Mike Capeling gave the Bears a victory in the 3,200-meter run in 10:30 flat, edging Westhill-Ludden’s Jake Suddaby (10:33.34) as Cazenovia’s Tony Koppers got sixth place in 11:30.18. Capeling also was fourth in the 1,000 in 2:49.41 and fourth in the mile in 4:49.08.
Then, in the 55 sprint, Chittenango’s Nick Stanton won by fractions over Westhill-Ludden’s Alex Kiley, 7.091 seconds to Kiley’s 7.093, this prior to Stanton’s third-place time of 38.80 seconds in the 300 and a sixth-place effort in the 600 in 1:35.12.
For the Cazenovia boys, a win was earned in the 4×200, where Cooper Coleman, Dylan Hahn, Dan McKillop and Alec Boone went 1:39.85 to edge Westhill-Ludden (1:39.94) by inches at the line. Individually, Boone did best in the long jump, where he finished third with a leap of 18’9 ½”, while Ray Satchwell cleared 5’6” for third place in the high jump and was sixth (35’3 ¾”) in the triple jump. McKillop tied for fifth in the pole vault, clearing 8’6”.
Coleman, Hahn, Boone and Angelo Annato were second (3:54.78) to Westhill-Ludden (3:45.40) in the 4×400, with Chittenango seeing Ward Beley, Devin Myers, Caleb Prenoveau and Devlin Cameron finish fourth in 4:06.79. Beley, Prenoveau, Dylan Price and Jacob Blaszkow were fourth (9:53.71) in the 4×800.
