Three shutouts in three singles matches helped the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team move its win streak to 263 consecutive matches as it rolled past the Cicero-North Syracuse Northstars 7-0 last Monday afternoon.
The Hornets’ trio of Riley Ma, Taran Judge and Michael Miller did not drop a game, each of them going 6-0 6-0 as Ma beat C-NS’s Justin Kegebein, Judge stopped Kavin Inthirakot and Miler knocked off Jack Irwin.
Moving to doubles, it got a bit tougher, but F-M still got through each match in straight sets, starting with James DeSorbo and Vince Sorrentino getting through a first-set tie-breaker to beat Rich Dennis and Connor Millias 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Meanwhile, Ravi Dhawan and Vince Grasso handled Mitch Eager and Nate Perotta 6-4, 6-1. It proved easier in the other matches, with Rohan Dhawan and Richard Wang topping John Barraco and Trey Nordin-Abbey 6-1, 6-0. Dilan Judge and Joel Fafrella earned their own 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Henry Rose and Mason Gross.
Two days later, F-M faced Liverpool and won another 7-0 decision, again with most of the close action taking place on the doubles side.
DeSorbo and Sorrentino had to work for a 7-5, 6-2 win over the Warriors’ top duo of Evan Maestri and Evan Vogue, with Wang and Rohan Dhawan beating Alexsandar Dzodic and Matt Renk 6-2, 7-5. R Qi and Jeremy Zhang got past Doddi and Jeff Meyer 6-0, 7-5.
Having a much easier time of it, Grasso and Ravi Dhawan routed the Munski brothers 6-0, 6-0, while up in singles the trio of Ma, Judge and Miller lost just two total games in six sets of work, Ma leading the way with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Mike Fensken as Judge and Miller beat, respectively, Adam Donle and Hayato Hirota by equal 6-1, 6-0 margins.
F-M finally surrendered a point for the first time this season on Thursday afternoon, but it mattered little as the Hornets handled Syracuse East 6-1.
Partially, this was because some players, like Ma, Miller, DeSorbo and Sorrentino, rested for this match. Taran Judge did play, and swept Rich Llanos 6-0, 6-0, while Cary Qian took a turn in singles and beat Nick Lozaponi 7-5, 6-1. But Nate Wolters, in second singles, lost a three-set battle to Samir Subba 1-6, 6-4, 10-5.
One doubles match was forfeited, but F-M won the other three in straight sets. Luke Qi and Jeremy Zhang beat Robert Collier and Hanh Duong 6-0, 6-2, with Aaron Castanza and Nolan Chiles getting past Muhialdain Muhialdain and Tang Moan Lian 6-1, 6-1. Dilan Judge and Joel Fafrella shut out Matt O’Neill and Aung Htoo 6-0, 6-0.
East Syracuse Minoa had a league match on Tuesday, getting close against Chittenango, but settling for a 4-3 defeat to the Bears, even though both Dan McGrath and Brad Quintana won their respective singles contests.
In doubles, Anson Cheng and John Pontillo beat Zach Falkenburg and Matt Lamphear 7-5, 7-5, only to see Kelvin Cheng and Bryant Pham take a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Keoni Saturnie and Ben Cyr. Jack Callahan and David Demazure took their own 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Chase Gordon and Holden Lalor.
