One more impressive effort from the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team insured that it will have the no. 1 seed for this week’s Section III playoffs.
For last Wednesday night’s game at Crisafulli Rink against Oswego, both teams honored the fight against breast cancer with pink “Stick It to Cancer” jerseys. Once the game started, though, it was the Lakers in the spotlight most of the time, rolling to an 8-2 victory over the Buccaneers.
Skaneateles had already beaten Oswego 5-1 on Dec. 8, but the rematch proved even more lopsided. All told, the Lakers took 49 shots to the Bucs’ 16, and converted often as Abby Kuhns led the way with a three-goal hat trick.
Caroline McGuigan, with two goals and one assist, offered ample support, as did Grace Schnorr, who earned three assists, and Sophie Kush, with one goal and two assists. Meagan Teachout had a goal and assist, with Katie Halko getting the other goal.
Iowanna Christou gained a pair of assists as Makie Kerr and Carly Mills had one assist apiece. Maria McLean, starting in goal, turned back 14 of the 16 shots she faced.
Now the Lakers, with an 11-3 record, took another weekend road trip, starting Friday at Plattsburgh with a tremendous all-around effort that resulted in Skaneateles putting up another big goal total and earning a 7-0 shutout.
Kush put in the first goal, assisted by Grace Schnorr. Then Schnorr and Lauren Jones assisted on Teachout’s tally as Kuhns’ terrific pass set up Mallory Kovacs for a goal that made it 3-0 in the Lakers’ favor.
Not stopping there, Skaneateles grew the margin to four as McGuigan took her turn finding the net, assisted by Kuhns and Kovacs. Then Kush, Teachout and Schnorr tacked on goals in the late going, while Schnorr worked her total to three assists as Melissa Amory joined Jones with single assists.
Then it faced Beekmantown on Saturday afternoon, and while it proved closer, Skaneateles continued to add to its win total, topping Beekmantown 5-3.
The Lakers play the opening round of the sectional tournament Wednesday night at Schneider Rink. A win keeps them on home ice for Saturday’s championship game,
