For now, nothing between the Marcellus and Westhill girls soccer teams is settled – but at least there’s a chance that could change.
The Mustangs and Warriors had their lone regular-season encounter on Wednesday afternoon, and played to a 0-0 standstill, not unlike the many draws these two sides had to settle for in years past.
But unlike 2014, they could meet again. After a one-year promotion to Class A, Marcellus is back in Class B, and as usual, the Mustangs, along with Westhill, are sectional championship favorites, so a post-season rematch would surprise no one.
Just getting to this game involved so much work, especially from Westhill, who made it through a daunting stretch of five games in six days with a 4-1 mark, only falling to Jamesville-DeWitt on Aug. 31 by a 3-1 margin.
After that, the Warriors beat East Syracuse Minoa and then, on Sept. 3, used a goal late in the second half to edge Christian Brothers Academy 3-2. Jayanna Monds scored twice in that game, with Sam VanBuren also finding the net. Katelyn Karleski, Abby Stack and Morgan Elmer earned assists.
Then, in the two-day tournament hosted by Marcellus on Sept. 4 and 5, Westhill won twice more, and so did the Mustangs, each of them conquering West Genesee and Bishop Ludden.
Going first against Ludden, Westhill won big, 5-0, having Megan O’Reilly and Ashley Corning each score twice, with Monds also converting. Stack and Hannah Dorfman added assists. Kara Beamish made 19 saves for the Gaelic Knights.
Then Marcellus edged West Genesee 2-1, with Alaina Young converting in the 15th minute to put the Mustangs in front. The Wildcats countered with Erin Mills finding the net early in the second half, but Madi Belvito headed in the eventual game-winner off Keelin Kelly’s corner kick in the second half. Combined, Emily Buscbascher and Meg Blystone had 11 saves.
A day later, Westhill blanked West Genesee 2-0, ignoring the heat, humidity and fatigue from a fifth game in six days by having Karleski score one goal and assist on the other, by Erin McMullen. Abby Stack contributed an assist and Arlana Heneberry stopped all five Wildcat shots she faced. Madonna got 10 saves.
Marcellus followed up by beating Ludden, the entire 5-0 margin built in the second half, starting with goals by Michaela Tangredi, Jada Sargeant and Ashley Gilmore within a 10-minute span early in the half. Kelly and Mia Montreal added goals as Shannon White joined Gilmore, Kelly and Sargeant in the assist column.
All of this led to Marcellus visiting Westhill, with the game pushed back 24 hours due to last Tuesday’s heat and humidity. By the time they did kick off, the temperatures had dipped 25 degrees, making things far more comfortable for everyone, players and spectators alike.
Right away, the defenses took over. Karleski, Shelby Stack and the rest of Westhill’s back line stood out, but so did the Mustangs’ resistance as Belvito and Kelly played on the back line to make sure that the Warriors’ forwards, especially Monds, were always tracked.
Through 80 minutes of regulation, there was fairly equal possession, but no goals. Between them, Marcellus goalies Meg Blystone and Emily Buschbascher made eight saves, while Heneberry stopped all 10 shots she faced.
The best chances in overtime came during the first extra session, where Blystone dove to stop a Monds shot and Megan O’Reilly sent a blast from the right side off the crossbar.
