One more time, Bryce Millar and Kyle Barber participated in a high school state championship meet with the intent to add more victories to the titles they have accumulated over the years across the fall, winter and spring.
And they did so, Millar and Barber both winning their respective distance races during Friday’s state championship meet at the University At Albany.
In the 3,200-meter run held Friday night, Millar found himself locked in a close battle with Collegiate’s Marco Pompilj for top honors.
It wouldn’t get decided until the wire, when Millar, in nine minutes, 18.61 seconds, edged Pompilj (9:18.75) by 0.14 seconds for the overall title, having already beaten Rochester McQuaid’s Nick Ciolkowski (9:20.26) for the Division I state championship.
Earlier that day, Barber was one of the favorites in the 800-meter run. To that point, his season-best time was 1:54.27, but Barber blew that away in this race, going 1:51.40 to get away and beat Gairy Springer (Thomas Jefferson), who was second in 1:51.91, and the rest of the field.
F-M’s girls team got on the medal podium in the triple jump, where Christabel Ezidegwu unleashed a top attempt of 38 feet 1 inch, beating her previous season-best total of 37’3” by 10 inches. Ezidiegwu finished fourth as Sachem North’s Leah Blackall won with 39’6 ½”. A day later, Ezidegwu was seventh in the Federation portion of the triple jump, going 36’9 ½”.
The state meet featured all kinds of local track stars from four different schools, including CBA’s Anna Schug, who medaled three times on the Division II (small schools) side.
Schug vied for medals in three different sprints for CBA. She was the fastest qualifier in the 200-meter dash in 25.71 seconds, moving to Saturday’s final, where she improved to 25.19 seconds, but finished fourth, 0.01 seconds behind third-place Kiana Lee (Irvington) as Newark Valley’s Courtney McNeil prevailed in 24.85 seconds.
In the 400-meter dash, Schug also got to the medal podium, earning fourth place in 56.23 seconds, breaking her season mark by 0.39 seconds. Rye Country Day’s Jinjer Pearce won in 55.54 seconds.
Kiana Ferguson tied for 10th in the 100-meter dash in 12.72 seconds, her fastest time of the spring, just missing the finals by 0.09 seconds. Ferguson, Schug, Ryleigh Peterson and Anna Langlois were fifth in the 4×100 relay in 50.08 seconds, just behind rival Skaneateles (49.86 seconds) in fourth place after beating the Lakers in that event during the June 4 state qualifier.
Jamesville-DeWItt freshman Alexandria Payne emerged as a contender in the Division I pentathlon. Going 15.34 seconds in the 100 hurdles, clearing 5’1” in the high jump and throwing the shot put 28’1 ¾”, Payne stood in fourth place through one day, with two events left.
Despite a long jump of 16 feet 4 ½ inches and an 800-meter run of 2:24.65, Payne remained in fourth place overall, third in the NYSPHSAA division, when the event was over, her total of 3,230 points trailing three others, including Bayport-Blue Point’s Kathleen Cibuls, who won with 3,425 points.
Barber and Millar, paired with Hamza El Habbal and Jon Abbott, were a contender in the 4×800 relay, ultimately taking fourth place in the NYSPHAA portion, and fifth overall, in 7:49.96 as Shenendehowa won in 7:40.55. In the 4×400, Barber, Ed Cheatham, Christian Bagabo and Jules Ngadula ran to 15th place in 3:25.70.
Also in the boys state meet, East Syracuse Minoa’s Jeremy McGrath, who took part in the 110 high hurdles and went 15.49 seconds, just off his season-beat 15.34 seconds and unable to reach the finals, finishing 15th. Jamesville-DeWitt’s Dylan Volk was 14th in the triple jump, going 41’9 ¼”.
CBA’s Tom SanGiacomo was 15th in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 23.32 seconds after going 22.66 seconds at one point this spring, with Dominic Morganti ninth in Division II in the 3,200-meter run and 20th overall with a time of 9:54.06.

Of them, Levy had the best result, getting to ninth place in the 3,000 in 10:04.09, ahead of Marra (10:18.18) in 12th place.
