Back on April 15, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team was pushed into overtime at Marcellus, but emerged with a 14-12 victory and Class C favorite status. All of that will be on the line again Wednesday night, when the revenge-minded Mustangs , no. 3 in the latest state Class C rankings, traveled to Hyatt Stadium for a highly-anticipated rematch with the state no. 2-ranked Lakers. Skaneateles simply wanted to avoid any mistakes or looking ahead in the games leading up to Marcellus, and accomplished that, starting with last Wednesday’s 14-4 victory over Westhill. For a half, the Warriors hung in there, finding the net on occasion, but still trailing 8-4 at the break. The Lakers then used its defense to clamp down in the second half, blanking the Warriors and allowing for a gradual getaway. As usual, Skaneateles was quite balanced in its attack, as Alana Navaroli and Molly Wood led the way with three goals apiece and Navaroli added an assist. Hannah Powers scored twice, adding two assists, while Emma Ford and Casey VanSlyke matched that two-goal output, Ford contributing a single assist. Nicole Beatson had a goal and two assists as Sophie Gorman added one goal and one assist. When Skaneateles paid a visit to Cazenovia on Saturday afternoon, much the same thing happened as, with one of its best offensive efforts of the season, Skaneateles overwhelmed that other group of Lakers by a 20-7 margin. Unlike with Westhill, Skaneateles had a comfortable 10-4 margin by the time they reached the half, and it was still close enough for the visitors to continue to play at a torrid pace, while the defense shut down Cazenovia’s top scorer, Kayla Dorrance, holding her without an assist after she had 10 assists in her previous game against Tully. Ten different players would score goals, led by Hannah Logan, who set a career mark by finding the net four times, followed closely by Navaroli, who had three goals and three assists, and eighth-grader Kyla Sears, who had her own three-goal hat trick. Ford and VanSlyke both gained two goals and two assists, while Beatson had two goals of her own. Wood and Powers each had one goal and one assist, with Gorman and Natalie Roche also finding the net. The Marcellus rematch, which follows Monday’s game against Chittenango, kicks off an exciting regular-season homestretch that also includes games next week against CBA and Fayetteville-Manlius.
