Jamesville-DeWitt’s track and field teams would both contend against large, elite fields as it went down Route 5 to compete in Friday’s Chittenango Invitational.
In fact, they nearly matched each other in points – the girls getting 41 points, the boys 40.5 points – as they both managed fifth-place finishes, the girls Red Rams tying West Genesee with that mark and the J-D boys alone in that fifth spot.
Nate Sturgeon battled for victory in the boys pentathlon, earning 2,510 points, which put him in second, just behind Watertown’s Matt Olney, who won with 2,581 points. Sturgeon was better in the 110 high hurdles and 1,500-meter run, but behind Olney in the high jump, shot put and long jump.
Moving to field events, Dylan Volk was second in the triple jump with 39 feet 8 inches, only behind Marathon’s Dan Harden (41’2”), as Joe Murphy was fifth with 39 feet. Kyle Rumble cleared 10 feet in the pole vault, tying for second behind Camden’s Ward Seymour, who won with 10’6”, while Taumeras Howard took fourth (5’6”) and Robert Murphy sixth in the high jump.l
Howard and Volk joined Zach Liebmann and Jaquan Tearney as J-D roared to second place in the 4×100 relay in 45.41 seconds, with Nottingham (44.78 seconds) prevailing and CBA in sixth place in 47.24 seconds. J-D also took fourth (8:59.17) in the 4×800 relay as Samuel Dye, Isaac Tupper, Will Hohreiter and Nick Harron took part.
Emilee Carpenter, Laura Wengert, Rachel Fairbanks and Katie Pinkes finished second in the 4×800 relay in 10:13.65, with Fayetteville-Manlius (9:40.10) on top. Fairbanks ran in the Fleet Feet Mile feature and got to third place in 5:16.82, with Carpenter fifth in 5:23.12.
Ally Fox, in 26.87 seconds, rose to second in the 200-meter dash behind Cazenovia’s Ashley Winn, who won in 25.83 seconds. Allison Semmel added a fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:12.30 and seventh in the 100 hurdles, and joined Fox, Mackenzie Mulvihill and Mackenzie Maxam as they got sixth place in the 4×100 relay.
Brooke DeRoberts, clearing 8 feet, was fourth in the pole vault, Tangela Hightower was sixth in the shot put (29’5”), just ahead of Salwa El-Hindi in seventh place. Hannah Stefl was sixth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
J-D, who had swept CBA the week before in OHSL Freedom division competition, did the same to Mexico last Wednesday, prevailing 97-35 on the boys side and 112-29 on the girls side.
Howard, running in the 100, finished in 11.7 seconds, going on to take the 200 sprint in 24.1 seconds. Sturgeon prevailed in the 400 hurdles (1:03.1) and went 18’8” to win the long jump as Volk recorded a top triple jump of 39’1”.
The Red Rams swept all the field events as Joe Murphy cleared 5’6” in the high jump, Brian Roth tossed the shot put 41’4 ½” and Davis Elmore had a top discus throw of 128’2”.
Liebmann was first in the 400 sprint in 54.1 seconds, also helping Howard, Volk and Sturgeon as J-D won the 4×100 relay in 44.5 seconds. This followed a 4×800 where the Rams, who saw Mexico star James Gowans sweep the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, got Hohreiter, Harron, Dye and Andrew Scibilia to win in 8:51.9.
In the girls meet, Sierra Vasiliou won three field events, throwing the shot put 33’1” and clearing 4’8” in the high jump while also going 14’4” in the long jump. Hightower threw the discus 90’2” to prevail there.
On the oval, Fox set the tone, prevailing in the 100 (12.7 seconds) and 200 (27.1 seconds) sprints. Fairbanks showed her versatility by claiming the 400 in 1:01.6 and the 3,000 in 11:45.3.
Taylor-Rae Danforth, victorious in the pole vault (5’6”), went 17.3 seconds to prevail in the 100 hurdles as Carpenter (1,500) Semmel (400 hurdles) and Wengert (800) also prevailed.
J-D also won two of the three relay events. Wengert, Fairbanks, Stefl and Samantha Clemons covered the 4×800 10:34.5, while Danforth, Fox, Vasiliou and Patrece Martin worked together and won the 4×100 in 51.6 seconds.
