For the second straight year, Skaneateles co-hosted, with Marcellus, a big girls track and field meet, drawing more than 20 teams to Marcellus on a gorgeous Saturday featuring some of the season’s best competitive conditions.
Madeline Adams made her way to second place in the 1,500-meter run, her time of 4:55.21 only topped by Natalie Marra (East Syracuse-Minoa), who won in 4:53.21.
Then, in the 800-meter run, Adams again made a push for the top, getting to a time of 2:25.65, but again that meant a runner-up finish as Baldwinsville’s Mackenzie Ross, in 2:17.91, put up the fastest Section III time of the spring in that event.
Taylor Woodruff went under a minute in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 59.21 seconds to claim third place as Anna Barnett (1:05.46) took eighth place. Woodruff also got to the 200-meter final and, in 27.14 seconds, had another third-place showing, while Katelyn Ellison (28.02 seconds) was eighth as Woodruff added a sixth (14 feet 9 ¾ inches) in the long jump.
Liz Dwyer took ninth place in the 1,500, but would help out in the 4×400 relay, where she, along with Barnett, Aubreah Lynn and Olivia Gage, needed 4:28.30 to grab fourth place. The Lakers made the 4×100 relay final, but did not finish.
Eighth-grader Julia Willcox contended in the 400 hurdles, where she finished fourth in 1:13.34, adding to a 12th in the high jump. Amanda Wetmore made it to the 100-meter dash final, where she was seventh in 13.57 seconds.
Morel Malcolm was 10th in the 2,000-meter steeplechase and Jane Gaffney was 11th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Keely Gregg 14th in the pole vault.
Just before that, the Lakers met Jordan-Elbridge last Tuesday afternoon, the girls improving to 2-0 in the OHSL Liberty division with a 95-45 victory over the Eagles and the boys side losing by a narrow 74-67 margin.
The girls Lakers based its victory upon a sweep of the distance events. Adams took the 800-meter run in 2:30.6 and also won the 1,500 (5:02.2) as Kaitlyn Neal covered 3,000 meters in 10:50.5.
Neal also helped Dwyer, Willcox and Gaffney as Skaneateles took the 4×800 relay in 10:23.5. On her own, Willcox was first in the 400 hurdles in 1:16.6.
Reneah Campbell needed 17.5 seconds to beat the field in the 100-meter hurdles, as Barnett took the 400-meter dash in 1:06.9. The Lakers’ 4×100 relay quartet of Wetmore, Ellison, Corrine LaFrance and Laurel Parker was first in 53.3 seconds.
Over in field events, Woodruff went 15 feet 2 inches to take the long jump. Morgann Byrne went 29’4 ½” to claim the triple jump as Gregg cleared 6’6” in the pole vault.
In the boys meet, the Lakers won four of the six field events, including the pole vault, where Carson Schwab cleared 11 feet to edge teammate Dan Sakal (10 feet) for the top spot.
Cooper Watt prevailed in the high jump, clearing 5’4”, and was second in the 3,200-meter run, while Patrick Biver went 39’1 ½” for a comfortable win in the triple jump. As for the long jump, Aristotle Hristodoulou went 17’11” for another first-place finish.
Biver lost a tense 400-meter dash to J-E’s Bill DiRenzo, though both finished in 51.9 seconds. Dan Kringer beat Schwab, 19.4 seconds to 19.7, in the 110 high hurdles as Matt Clymer covered the 400 hurdles in 1:05.8 for another victory. Schwab also was second (12.1 seconds) in the 100-meter dash.
Skaneateles claimed just one of the three relays – the 4×100, where Kringer, helped by the likes of Dan Wolfanger, Nick Smolenski and Max Dwyer, won in 46.6 seconds. Clymer, Wolfanger, Smolenski and Biver were a close second (3:39 flat) to J-E (3:37.4) in the 4×400. Chris Niehbur got second place in the mile in 5:15.8 as the Eagles Jack Gugel (5:12.3) prevailed.
Each of the Skaneateles track sides host Hannibal on Tuesday, looking to stay atop the OHSL Liberty standings, before going to CBA’s Brother Basilian Invitational on Friday afternoon.
