Though they each displayed their own strengths in their own events, the Solvay and Westhill/Bishop Ludden boys indoor track and field teams ended up in the exact same spot atop the standings at the end of Wednesday night’s OHSL Liberty/Patriot division championship meet at SRC Arena.
With equal totals of 93 points, the Bearcats and Warriors headed a 12-team pack. Marcellus, with 27 points, lagged back in eighth place as Jordan-Elbridge earned 12 points.
Solvay sprinter Nick Cometti won the 55-meter dash in 6.74 seconds, where Will Coon (Marcellus) was sixth, and added a victory in the 300-meter dash in 37.47 seconds, with two Westhill/Ludden runners, Christian St. Amour (38.09 seconds) and Ben Rath (38.53 seconds), right behind.
Cometti’s teammate, Eric Goodrich, won the 600-meter run, topping Marcellus’ Justin Garn, 1:28.89 to 1:29.43, with Westhill/Ludden teammates Xavier Fleurinor and Peter Guy third and fourth, respectively.
Guy, joined by Rath, St. Amour and John Ringwood, won the 4×200 relay for Westhill/Ludden in 1:39.40, where Marcellus was third in 1:41.24. It also rose to third place in the 4×400 relay in 3:50.15, just ahead of Solvay (3:52.15) in fourth.
For Westhill/Ludden, Casey Bunce, in the 1,000-meter run, prevailed in 2:48.13, leaving the Bearcats’ Matt Battaglia (2:49.51) in third as J-E’s Nathan Hollis was fifth. Fleurinor added a second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.75 seconds, with Solvay’s Josh Marotti third in 8.78 seconds.
Ryan Manahan gave Marcellus a victory in the mile in 4:31.48, leaving Bunce (4:51.48) far back in second place and Peter Lynch (4:52.58) in third. Lynch did get second place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:24.64, with Liam Rodgers (10:59.93) in fourth as Solvay’s Colton Francemone snatched a point for sixth place.
J-E got most of its points from the 4×800 relay, where Bill DiRenzo, Dylan Whittico, Austin Milton and Jack Gugel prevailed in 8:40.97, welll clear of runner-up Hannibal (8:55.71). Westhill/Ludden got third place (8:59.49), with Solvay fifth.
Brian McLeod emerged for the Bearcats in field events,winning the triple jump with a best leap of 42 feet 1 3/4 inches as his teammate, Isaiah Lee, got fifth place. McLeod also topped 5’10” for second place in the high jump and took second in the long jump with 19’10” as Guy finished fifth for Westhill/Ludden.
Marotti cleared 11’6″ in the pole vault, putting him in second place.Solvay’s Frank Pucello was fourth in the shot put (42’10 3/4″), with teammate Luke Randall fifth and Westhill/Ludden’s Anthony Pecoriello in sixth. The Mustangs’ Brian O’Connell was fifth in the high jump.
As for West Genesee, it could only manage a fourth-place finish in the CNY Counties League National division meet with 63 points, well off Cicero-North Syracuse’s winning total of 162.5 points.
The Wildcats would earn a win in the 4×800, where Jack Erhard, Logan MacNulty, Nate Conroy and Nick Garty finished in 8:31.39, beating runner-up C-NS by more than six seconds.
By himself, Conroy contended in the 1,000, finishing second (2:41.43) to Liverpool’s Alex Christensen (2:39.43), while Erhard earned second place in the 600 in 1:28.26, just behind Baldiwnsville’s Andy Fleming (1:27.71). Mike Lannon ran to sixth in the 3,200 and MacNulty was sixth in the mile.
Ben Brown, West Randall, Alex Hudson and Eldon Hard got to second place in the 4×200 in 1:41.50. Randall, Brown, Nick Gart and Matt Romano were third in the 4×400 in 3:46.70. Nico Rinaldo cleared 5’4″ for third place in the high jump.
Individually, Brown took fourth (7.06 seconds) in the 55 sprint and Randall was fourth in the 300 (38.08 seconds), with Jack Powell fifth in the 55 hurdles and triple jump. Sean Relyea earned fifth place in the pole vault, with Ron McKnight sixth in the shot put.
All of this leads to the Section III championship meets, which take place next Wednesday (Class AA-A) and Thursday (B-C-D) at SRC Arena.
