Through the up-and-down nature of its opening stretch, the Cazenovia girls soccer team had the luxury of an easier schedule at home, and took full advantage.

Meeting Jordan-Elbridge last Monday night at the Sean Googin Sports Complex, the Lakers again got a strong effort from Kristi Klein as the centerpiece of a 7-0 shutout of the Eagles.

Klein, who amassed six goals in a home win over Hannibal on Sept. 4, had only half that total this time, but the three-goal hat trick, plus an assist, was part of a 28-shot assault on Cazenovia’s part.

Kelsi Fredericks matched Klein’s point total, scoring twice and contributing two assists. Audrey Burbidge also had two assists as Abbie McEntee and Claire Costello each had one goal.

Now the Lakers set out on the road, starting Wednesday night with a visit to Solvay, where Klein again proved unstoppable during a 6-3 victory over the Bearcats.

Charging out of the gate, Cazenovia took a 4-1 lead to halftime. And it matched Solvay’s production the rest of the way as Klein tacked on four more goals to her total, often fed by Fredericks, who had three assists.

Costello found the net twice, giving Klein some ample support, while Nicole White earned a single assist. And it took Jamie Enders’ 13 saves to overcome a pair of goals by Solvay’s Chelsie Delperuto.

This led to Saturday’s big test at Skaneateles, where the two Lakers sides would battle out for 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, but settle nothing in a 1-1 draw.

Shut down in the first half, Cazenovia trailed, 1-0, at the break thanks to Catie Woodruff’s goals. But Kleine broke free in the second half and put in the equalizer, and there it would stay thanks to stellar work in goal by Jamie Enders, who finished with 10 saves overall.

Cazenovia gets a shot at Bishop Ludden Tuesday before a key Thursday-night home meeting with Westhill, another prime Class B title contender.
