Without an immense amount of sweat, the Christian Brothers Academy boys lacrosse team worked its way back to the Section III Class C championship game, earning a chance to avenge its only defeat of the season.

On Wednesday night, at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium, the Brothers (19-1) clash with LaFayette (17-3), a game that will come just 14 days after the Lancers beat the Brothers 14-10 to ruin CBA’s dreams of a perfect season.

To reach the finals, CBA had to work its way through two rounds of games last week, both against Frontier League opponents from the north country.

It started with last Thursday night’s Class C quarterfinal against no. 9 seed South Jefferson at Alibrandi Stadium. Though far from sharp on defense, the Brothers still produced enough to whip the Spartans 19-8.

Even when South Jefferson would score four times, as it did in the third quarter, CBA would counter with seven goals, matching what it would produce in the entire first half. It also closed on a 5-1 run.

Craig Lange and Devin Daly each gained five goals, and Jack Harmatuk was right with them, earning four goals and three assists.

Jovan Miller won plenty of draws, but also got two goals and two assists, while Colin Price, Tom Trasolini and Nate Frechette earned single goals. Brian Messe, Pete Vercillo and Ben Ashenburg all earned assists.

This led to Saturday’s Class C semifinal at Bragman Stadium against no. 5 seed Watertown IHC, who crushed Tully 15-8 in the quarterfinal to reach this point.

And while it was frustrating at times against a hot goalie, the Brothers would pull away in the late going, eliminating the Cavaliers 12-5.

For every time CBA was able to solve IHC’s zone defense and score, another attempt would get swallowed up, as Cavalier goalie Michael Michael Jeschawitz piled up 16 saves, many of them spectacular ones.

That kept IHC within sight, as it trailed by just three (7-4) going into the fourth quarter. However, the Brothers’ depth, balance and patience all won the day, as it outscored the Cavs 5-1 the rest of the way to earn its ticket to the finals.

Lange led the way with a three-goal hat trick, as Harmatuk and Miller earned two goals apiece. Ashenburg and Pat Kenville emerged as offensive forces, each of them scoring twice to match the output of Harmatuk and Miller. Daly had a goal and two assists, as Tim Kelley and Tom Trasolini earned assists, too.

CBA then watched LaFayette barely hold off Skanetaeles 9-8 in the other semifinal, setting up a classic final where both the Brothers and Lancers won once in regular-season meetings, CBA doing so at Henninger on April 12, LaFayette earning the victory four weeks later. The third meeting will decide a champion.
