Before the first week in April was done, the Liverpool boys lacrosse team hoped to show that it could bounce back from a painful defeat.

Instead, it absorbed two doses, and not even a stirring rally in the snow could prevent that from happening.

The first blow was inflicted last Tuesday night, at home, when the Warriors’ late drought translated into an 8-7 overtime loss to Auburn.

At 0-2, the Maroons had stumbled in March, but a turn of the calendar brought out a more competitive unit as it hung right with Liverpool throughout most of the contest.

Despite its own solid play, the Warriors led by just two, 7-5, going into the fourth quarter, but would not score again as Auburn drew even.

Then, halfway through the first overtime period, the Maroons attacked, culminating in Bill Weiman whipping a shot past Liverpool goalie Mike Grizanti, who had 13 saves to that point in the night.

Tyler Kamide and Derek Kreuzer each put in two goals for the Warriors, with Kamide adding an assist. Ricky Azzoto, Justin Rowley and Tyler Long had single tallies with Tyler Howe and Bob Audley adding assists. Matt Chadderdon (three goals) and Matt Hoey (two goals, one assist) led the Maroons’ push.

Now, two days later, the Warriors had to go play Baldwinsville, coming off its own tough defeat against West Genesee.

Amid the season’s coldest and most miserable conditions, Liverpool again went to overtime — and again suffered an 8-7 defeat.

Right from the time Grizanti’s botched clearing pass turned into a Jeremy Boltus goal in the game’s opening minute, Liverpool found itself playing catch-up.

But while B’ville led most of the game, the Warriors made sure it never got out of hand, and Grizanti had a lot to do with it, recording 21 saves.

The brutal conditions, helped, too. A combination of cold temperatures, frequent snow showers and wind turned the field into mud and slowed everyone up.

Each time the Warriors would tie it (3-3, then 5-5), B’ville would inch back in front, and when Boltus got his third goal with 5:30 to play in regulation, Liverpool trailed 7-5.

Less than a minute later, Kreuzer earned his second goal, making it 7-6. A series of penalties threatened to end the affair, but Liverpool got the ball back and, with 44 seconds left, Kreuzer put home the tying goal past Jordan Marra.

As the snow intensified, neither side could score in the first overtime despite a slew of opportunities. But 1:45 into the second OT, B’ville star Jack Venditti broke loose from his defender and shot it past Grizanti.

Aside from Kreuzer’s hat trick, Audley (two goals, one assist) and Long (one goal, two assists) were the main Liverpool threats. Kamide had the other goal.

On Tuesday, the Warriors test itself against five-time defending sectional champion West Genesee before Essex, a school from Vermont, visits on Friday night.
