ONONDAGA COUNTY – Ever since a four-set defeat to Rochester McQuaid on Sept. 30, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys volleyball team has made sure no one in October has kept with them.
Back in action last Wednesday night against Syracuse City, the Northstars pulled off another sweep, claiming it by scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-18.
Joe Seliger had nine kills, with Reece Congel getting six kills and two blocks. Carter King also had six kills as Peter Gill and Colin Deitz had four kills apiece and Jack Waite got 22 assists. Zach D’Agositno added four assists as Josh Luce, with seven digs, paced the defense.
Even more impressive was what C-NS did against Fayetteville-Manlius on Thursday night, with the Northstars only threatened in the second set, but still handling the Hornets 25-12, 25-22, 25-19.
Unstoppable at the net, Seliger put away 18 kills, with King getting 10 kills. Congel (eight kills), Gill (seven kills) and Andrew George (five kills) added depth on the front line as Waite gave them 40 assists and Luce gained 16 digs.
During the same week, Liverpool went up for a second time against F-M and again lost to the Hornets, this time in four sets.
Swept when they met Sept. 13, the Warriors were able to win the second set 25-22 and pull even after dropping the opening set 25-17. In the third set, F-M went back in front, 25-19, and did just enough in the fourth set to close out the match 25-22.
Anthony Pezzino still had a big night for the Warriors, putting away 20 kills and adding 11 digs, while Sean Frawley had eight kills. Jack DeForge added four kills to go with his 27 assists as Shah Sahak had 13 digs and Derek Grimshaw managed three kills to go with two aces.
On F-M’s side, Connor Sugar set the tone thanks to his 45 assists. Chris Cleary, with 17 kills, led a front line where Mike McAndrew gained 11 kills, Max Danaher got nine kills and Charles Addonizio had eight kills/
But the Warriors turned this around on Friday night against East Syracuse Minoa, putting together an impressive 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 sweep of the Spartans.
Not only did Pezzino earn 17 kills, he accumulated 11 digs, served up five aces and had four blocks. Sahak finished with 13 digs as DeForge earned 24 assists, adding three kills to match Grimshaw’s total.
