Liverpool, Cicero-North Syracuse boys tennis takes part in Class A sectionals

Warriors' Miller secures best local finish, third at first singles

CORTLAND – Several members of the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool boys tennis teams made their way south to SUNY-Cortland Wednesday to take part in the Section III Class A championships.

Liverpool’s best finish came in first singles thanks to Justin Barrett, who against C-NS’s Wyatt Dupell in the quarterfinals rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 after Dupell beat Philip Pociecha (Rome Free Academy) 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round.

Running into top seed Antonio Marsallo (Baldwinsville) in the semifinals, Barrett lost, 6-2, 6-0, but he recovered in the third-place match to beat West Genesee’s Noah Ruston 7-5, 6-1.

Cole Potrzeba nearly matched that finish in third singles, beating Krish Patel (East Syracuse Minoa 6-2, 6-3 and then, in the quarterfinals, surviving a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 battle with Oswego’s Marcus Baker.

Running into B’ville’s Logan Bolton in the semifinals, Potrzeba lost, 6-3, 6-4, while C-NS’s Brandon Nguyen won 6-3, 6-3 over Utica Proctor’s Po Wah before Bolton beat him 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

In second singles, the Warriors’ Evan Miller came back to beat Dante Cox (Syracuse East) 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 despite being two games from defeat. Miller then fell 6-0, 6-0 to Christian Brothers Academy’s Soren Kang in the quarterfinals, where C-NS’s Matthew Jordan could not hold an early lead against Oswego’s Joshua Chun in a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 loss.

In first doubles, C-NS’s Daniel Jordan and Brady Petranchuk had a bye straight into the quarterfinals, but lost a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Christian Brothers Academy’s Fabrizio Arezzo and Finn Doyle.

The same thing happened to Joe DeGroat and Tim Mai in second doubles, with a quarterfinals berth and a quick exit as, in three sets, they fell to Auburn’s Charles Tracy and Troy Wagner 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
