CENTRAL NEW YORK – Fortunately for area high school track and field teams, the snow cleared out and melted in time for some of them to have their league openers.
While Westhill had to push back its meet against Cazenovia, Marcellus was able to take on Christian Brothers Academy and pull off an impressive sweep.
Peter McCaffrey was at the forefront for the boys Mustangs in its 106-39 victory over the Brothers, putting up a top triple jump of 42 feet 8 ½ inches to go with a top long jump of 19’6” and a clearance of 5’8” in the high jump.
Elsewhere in field events, Andrew McCaffrey cleared 9’6” in the pole vault, with George Hanford getting a top shot put throw of 34’1” and Tyler Brown unleashing a discus throw of 108’3”.
Mason Grieb prevailed twice on the track, with a top time of 1:05.3 in the 400 hurdles and a 110 hurdles title in 18.3 seconds. Nate Alexander added a 3,200-meter win in 11:40.4.
Meanwhile, the girls meet had Marcellus roll past CBA 92-39 as Heidi Steigerwald stood out in the pole vault, able to clear 10’8” to establish herself among the top athletes in Section III in that event.
Anella Bolster had a first-place long jump of 14’3 ½” and a top triple jump of 31’10 ½”as Bailey Ellis swept the throwing events, going 27’6 ¾” in the shot put and 68 feet in the discus.
Sophia Bianchi won twice on the track for the Mustangs, taking the 100 hurdles in 18.9 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:21.8, while Virginia Lucchetti went 5:30.3 to break up CBA’s control of distance events.
Skaneateles handled Hannibal 83-53 that same afternoon on the boys side of a meet where the girls Lakers were victorious over the Warriors 81-46.
Kyla Palmer starred for the Skaneateles girls, going 58.6 seconds in the 400 sprint and taking the 200 in 27.7 seconds as Elizabeth Springer won the 100 in 13.8 seconds and helped the Lakers take the 4×100 relay.
Lily Coleman ran 1,500 meters in 5:37 flat and Lucy Fleckenstein was first in the 800 in 2:40.4, with Tobi DiRubbo going to the front in the 3,000 in 12:58.8 to complete a distance sweep. Maddie Wright cleared 4’10” in the high jump and Isabella Arroyo had a top shot put toss of 24’10”.
Jordan-Elbridge faced Phoenix and took an 87-44 loss to the Firebirds in the boys meet, but the girls Eagles were victorious by a score of 73-56.
At the forefront for the J-E girls, Vassi Klock swept the distance races, going 2:31.0 in the 800, 5:09.0 in the 1,500 and 9:59.97 to win a dramatic 3,000 over Phoenix’s Zoe Gordon.
Tatianna Parkolap cleared 4’6” in the high jump and threw the shot put 24’7”. Coral Uhle chimed in with a top time of 1:05.5 in the 400 sprint and 27.9 seconds in the 200. Teagan Disinger took the 100 hurdles and Avery Yard won the triple jump with 29’7”.
West Genesee saw its girls team split its SCAC Metro division opener, the Wildcats handling Nottingham but taking a 91-50 loss to Cicero-North Syracuse.
