CENTRAL NEW YORK – It may prove impossible for the Bishop Ludden baseball team to achieve anything as memorable as the seven-run seventh-inning comeback it made to beat Central Square on March 30.
Even if that’s the case, though, there’s no question about the Gaelic Knights’ confidence gained by that rally against the Redhawks, which transferred over into last Tuesday’s 9-0 shutout over Fabius-Pompey.
Jimmy Westers pitched a complete game, surrendering just four hits to the Falcons while earning 10 strikeouts and watching his Ludden teammates score in five consecutive innings, starting in the top of the third.
Three of the Gaelic Knights’ eight hits came from Joe Dunham, all doubles. Luke Ruddy doubled and drove in two runs, with Mike Masterpole, Tom Cervantes and Andrew Pullano adding RBIs.
Then Ludden routed Onondaga 24-1 on Wednesday, peaking in a second inning when it went around the order twice and didn’t let until it had recorded 13 runs.
Westers, Joe Dunham and Brandon Burch led the way with three hits apiece. Also, Westers doubled and got four RBIs, with Ruddy and Tim Dunham each driving in three runs as Pullano and Joe Dunham had two RBIs apiece.
Marcellus had its own dramatic win against Bishop Grimes last Tuesday, taking eight innings to beat the Cobras 5-4.
Two-run rallies in the second and third innings had the Mustangs in front 4-0, but Grimes caught up with three runs in the sixth and another in the top of the seventh.
Still, Marcellus recovered enough to win it in the eighth, Dakota Wilson leading the way with three hits and two RBIs as Max Chapman and Jack Waterman had two hits apiece. Elijah Eaton, Chris Loveless and Ethan Dilmore also drove in runs as Dilmore pitched five innings and amassed 15 strikeouts before Gavin Foy and Gavin Mumford worked in relief.
Solvay struggled last Tuesday in a 13-0 defeat to Phoenix where Firebirds pitching ace Ty Corey no-hit them, only giving up walks to Cameron Cappetta and Jacob Bigelow while striking out 11 and also getting three hits and three RBIs at the plate. Max Overend took the loss.
