CENTRAL NEW YORK – A month full of action for the Baldwinsville wrestling team will culminate this Saturday afternoon, when the Bees host its annual invitational meet following matches earlier in the week against East Syracuse Minoa and Fayetteville-Manlius.
But the Bees already have a pair of Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division matches in the books, including last Monday’s visit to Liverpool, which resulted in a 43-20 victory over the Warriors.
After dropping the first two bouts on the card, B’ville started to take over at 101 pounds when Brennan Kline pinned Jude Atchie, after which Cael Bruce, at 108 pounds, pinned Aiden Adams-Bovenzi.
Levi Schanzenbach, wrestling at 123 pounds, began a decisive stretch by outscoring Gavin Connolly 11-6, with a big win at 131 pounds earned by Scottie Warner when he took down Marek Sokolowski in overtime for a 5-3 decision.
Starting with Ryan Heck (145 pounds) beating Will Cowan 13-6, the Bees claimed the last five bouts on the card as Davian McLeod (152 pounds) kept Lantz Herrera off the scoresheet in an 8-0 shutout.
Nathan Cali’s pin of Ryan Heneka at 160 pounds made it 31-20, and Aaron Fredenburg pinned Dante Malozzi at 170 pounds to clinch the team victory as Judson Ferris (190 pounds) closed with a pin over Anthony Martini.
Back on Dec. 9, B’ville made the short trip to compete in the Phoenix Round Robin and did quite well, finishing fifth in an 18-team field with 118 points as Palmyra-Macedon (261 points) easily claimed the title.
Bruce, wrestling at 108 pounds, reached the championship round, the lone Bees wrestler to do so, only to take a 6-1 defeat to New Hartford’s Jacob Hurd.
Fredenburg and Ferris both secured third-place finishes, with Fredenburg blanking APW/Pulaski’s Ethan Purdy 9-0 in his consolation bracket final and Ferris pinning Mexico’s Manuel Pelton-Vazquez in just 25 seconds to secure his spot.
At 101, Kline finished fifth, pinning Deni Dahgestani (Grand Island) in 50 seconds for that spot, while Don’Sincere Allen got sixth place at 285 pounds.
B’ville’s girls wrestling team was back on the mat last Wednesday to face Holland Patent, where the Bees lost a 34-12 decision to the Golden Knights, and both wins were forfeits to Bella Baker at 145 pounds and Breanna Leo at 185 pounds.
