CENTRAL NEW YORK – Back in tournament action across Central New York last Saturday, area high school wrestling teams would each put together fine all-around efforts.
Jordan-Elbridge was part of a 12-team field in the Penfield-Hunter Holiday Tournament and, with 130.5 points, the Eagles were third behind Webster Thomas and Horseheads.
Still, J-E sent five wrestlers to finals and won four of them, including an all-Eagles 170-pound championship bout where Jack Lamson pinned Henry Elbridge in just 37 seconds.
In yet another 37-second fall, Mason Tanner quickly beat Horseheads’ Josh Knapp for the 101-pound crown, while Lucas Witter (131 pounds) pinned Alex Pabon (Webster Thomas) in 83 seconds for his title.
Dylan Nolan won at 138 pounds by pinning Cody Dale (Horseheads) in the second period. Two others – Ben Lamson at 101, Liam Mantell at 108 pounds – recorded fourth-place finishes.
Challenged Wednesday by Southern Hills, J-E was able to beat the Storm 42-27 as it overcame a 21-6 deficit built up in the higher weight classes.
Jack Lamson still pinned David Frazee at 190 pounds, with Ben Lamson, at 108 pounds, commencing the comeback when he pinned Presley Homer in 67 seconds.
In short order, Witter, Nolan and Connor Fraher (124 pounds) all earned pins to clinch the match before the final two bouts, where Adam DelCostello (152 pounds) was able to pin Cash Homer in 2:08.
Marcellus was part of last weekend’s Dave Buck Memorial Tournament at Unadilla Valley in the Southern Tier, where the Mustangs would finish third out of 11 teams (behind only Windsor and Unatego) and produce two champions.
Colin Scherer dominated at 138, rolling past Elmira’s Max Collins 14-4 in the title bout, while at 108 Knoll McCoy went to the top when he pinned teammate Jake Burton with 15 seconds left in their head-to-head clash.
Trevor Rankin finished second at 152, while Elliott Barbosa pinned teammate Jayden Abbott for third place at 190 and Blaine Haney, at 101 pounds, pinned Andrew Lelik (Newark Valley) to take third.
Proceeding from there, Marcellus bashed Mexico 56-16 on , claiming the first seven bouts on the card.
Chris Doshna, at 170, got it going with a 38-second pin of Seth Prentice. Jayden Abbott (215 pounds) edged Dakota Delfaco 4-2 in between pins by Elliott Barbosas (190 pounds) and Caleb Posecznick (285 pounds).
Then Haney and McCoy prevailed before as forfeit to Jake Burton. Later in the meet, Jack Burton (131 pounds) won with a pin, as did Scherer at 145 pounds, with Rankin moving up to 160 pounds to pin Joe Gaita in the closing seconds of the first period.
West Genesee was at last Saturday’s Central Valley Academy’s Valley Duals, where it went 3-2 overall, starting out with defeats to Gouverneur 37-30 and a 48-20 defeat to host CVA.
From there, the Wildcats got on a winning track the rest of the say. It beat Lowville 42-26 with pins from Austin Fesinger (131 pounds). Logan Willis (138 pounds), Maxx Fesinger (170 pounds) and Raul Colon (215 pounds), followed by handling Liverpool 50-24 and closing out the day beating Mount Markham 48-21.
Back in league action Wednesday to face Cicero-North Syracuse, WG was beaten in the first seven bouts on the card during a 53-19 defeat to the Northstars.
Between five pins and two major decisions, the Wildcats were still shut out when, at 131, Austin Fesinger got a 15-0 technical fall over Javone Dawkins. Everything else followed late, Willis pinning Luke Hogue as Maxx Fesinger, moving back to 160, routed Zion Mukasa 13-3 and Dylan Radcliffe (152) nearly equaled it, beating Jacob Day 12-3.
