WEEDSPORT – Two meets, two road trips – and two victories earned by the West Genesee boys swim team.
The Wildcats made it 2-0 by going to Weedsport Tuesday night and rolling to a 109-74 decision thanks to six victories, 10 second-place finishes and six third-place efforts.
Yet it was a meet where Skaneateles swimmers that compete with Weedsport during the regular season stood out, especially Gavin Van Kersbergen and Liam Byrons.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Van Kersbergen prevailed in two minutes, 10.73 seconds, beating the 2:22.20 from WG’s David Martin. Then, in the 100 backstroke, a time of 56.56 seconds got Van Kersbergen to the top.
Another Skaneateles standout, Liam Byrons, won the 200 freestyle in 2:02.90, edging the 2:03.63 from the Wildcats’ Sean Putnam, and would also beat the field in the 500 freestyle in 5:39.38, with WG’s Brady Lee in third place.
WG began the meet with Lee, Ryan Goshow, Gavin Flanagan and David Martin going to the 200 medley relay and claiming that event in 1:52.67. Martin would also win the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.73 as part of a 1-2-3 sweep with Mason Reichert (1:17.12) and Jacob Skardinski (1:20.17).
From there, Goshow would take the 100 butterfly in 1:05.04 to Sean Putnam’s 1:08.17. and then take second to Van Kersbergen in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.37 as Seth Burlingame was third.
Skaneateles’ Jacob Gordon was second in the 50 freestyle in 24.99 seconds, edging Flanagan’s 25.04 in third place. Flanagan also was second in the 100 freestyle in 54.16, while Gordon (56.48) was third. Burlingame was second in diving with 170.15 points, with Anthony Kotlyarov third and Lee fourth.
The Wildcats go for three wins in a row next Tuesday, at Oswego, before a Dec. 20 clash with Cicero-North Syracuse at Nottingham High School.
