CENTRAL NEW YORK – This was another big week for area high school girls volleyball, capped by Marcellus hosting its annual late-season tournament.
Skaneateles would appear at this after a first week of October where it had gone 4-0 in a span of just five days.
As a follow-up, there was last Wednesday’s trip to Cazenovia, the two Laker sides having faced each other in September and Skaneateles winning at home in four sets.
In the rematch, it went longer, Skaneateles pulling out a close 26-24 win in the opening set and winning the third 25-21, but Cazenovia twice coming back as it won the second set 25-23 and the fourth 25-18.
Only with a 15-10 run through the third set did Skaneateles pull it out, anchored on the back line by Delaney Fish’s 21 assists and Cydney Pitman’s 17 assists as Alyssa Franciamone saved rallies with her 22 digs.
Up fron, Ayla Pas’cal was exceptional, earning 21 kills and four blocks. Maggie Lootens had eight kills and 13 digs, while Ellie Walsh had six kills and 11 digs. Pas’cal, Lootens and Walsh served up three aces apiece.
Cazenovia had swept Solvay 25-10, 25-22, 25-18 the night before facing Skaneateles. Hannah Cintron, with 13 digs and eight assists, led the Bearcats as Hannah Haase had five kills and Emma Rutkowski four kills. Gianna D’Eredita served well with 10 aces to go with her eight digs.
Far from this, Westhill kept rolling. In a 25-12, 25-11, 25-14 romp over Homer last Wednesday night, Ava Baty’s 36 assists went to a deep front line where Alison Lancette got 15 kills and Eva Tarolli added 12 kills. Brynn Schneider managed eight kills as Sofia Dimovski got four kills and Jocelyn Caputo four aces to go with three kills.
Marcellus went four sets against Phoenix that same night, winning it 25-16, 25-11, 25-19. Maddy Foy, with 10 kills, led a well-balanced front line as Bryn Goldsworthy got nine kills, Harper Camp seven kills and Ellie DeMarle six kills. Mary Curtin fed all of them with 30 assists, Hannah Fagan earning 10 digs.
When Solvay faced Mexico on Thursday, it won 25-18, 25-19, 25-11, improving its overall record to 4-10. Haase earned four kills and eight digs, with D’Eredita earning six aces, six assists and five digs. Riley Gosha contributed five assists
West Genesee rolled past Homer 25-8, 25-9, 25-17 last Tuesday as Claire DeVore put up 12 kills. Cami Zajac had seven kills, with Ella Bickering adding five kills as Sonya Dunham got 15 assists and Sidney Hamilton nine assists. Colleen Barry earned 11 digs.
Then, on Thursday night, the Wildcats were impressive against Jamesville-DeWitt, tearing through the first set 25-14 and then taking the next two sets over the Red Rams by 25-20 and 25-21 margins.
Dunham got 13 assists and Hamilton added 10 assists. Up front, DeVore got 10 kills, with Lillianna Iacampo adding six kills. Zajac had four kills and Isabella Vallely managed three kills, plus three blocks.
Jordan-Elbridge moved to 11-5 on the season last Tuesday with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-6 romp over Syracuse Academy of Science.
Zoie Karcz had four of the Eagles’ 17 aces, adding eight assists. Brooke Chiaramonte had three aces as Sydney Parsons recorded a team-best three kills and Claire Brown had four digs.
A 25-14, 25-9, 25-13 rout of Hannibal followed on Thursday night, Chiaramonte improving to four aces as the Eagles had 15 aces overall, two each by Parsons (who had five kills), Brown, Zoie Karcz, Kendra Anderson and Abby DelFavero.
Bishop Ludden got the best of rival Bishop Grimes 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 last Tuesday, largely fueled by the serving of Sarah Prowak, who gave the Gaelic Knights 12 aces as Tiz’Ariah Billue had four aces and four kills. Sophia Rivera earned six asssits and Natalie Testa got five assists, Ava Bush adding three kills.
But Ludden struggled Thursday in a 25-12, 25-19, 25-15 defeat to LaFayette. Testa earned eight assists, with Ava Bush getting four kills and seven digs. Billue added five digs.
