ONONDAGA COUNTY – Even if the 2023 season saw the end of a long streak and a close race for league supremacy, the Baldwinsville boys golf team still could finish on top.
It all hinges on the sectional Classs AA fall tournament, taking place next Wednesday at Drumlins right after a regular-season finale Tuesday against West Genesee Gold that could decided the regular-season SCAC Metro division crown.
First, though, B’ville Red met Fayetteville-Manlius Green Friday on its home grounds at Timber Banks and, remembering what happened the last time these teams met, the Bees got even with a 194-206 victory.
F-M Green put an end to B’ville’s 25-match win streak Sept. 8 at Green Lakes, but on more familiar ground the Bees swept the top three individual spots.
Billy Shipman led the way, his even-par 36 for nine holes one better than Alex Blum’s 37 as Owen Frechette, with a 38, beat out the 39 from the Hornets’ Henry Will.
Sebastian Branishaw stepped up to shoot a 41 that, along with Caleb Kinney’s 42, clinched the victory. Only Will broke 40 for F-M Green as Tyler Burns and Duncan McDaniel both equaled Branishaw’s 41.
B’ville’s White team lost last Monday to WG Gold 187-226 at Westvale. Dominic Purtell’s 44 was topped as five Wildcats broke 40, led by Jameson Bard’s 35. Craig Vredenburg, Dominic DeRito and Brayden Sheridan each shot 45 ahead of Trevor Miller’s 47.
In a Thursday rematch at Timber Banks, B’ville White lost again, 197-213. Miller stepped up with a 41, but four WG Gold golfers matched or beat that total, led by an even-part 36 from Ben Glass. Putrell shot 42, with DeRito and Vredenburg each posting 43 and Sheridan a 44.
Then, on Friday, it was B’ville White taking a 204-217 loss to West Genesee Blue. Vredenburg and Miller both shot 39 at Westvale, trailing only to a 38 from the Wildcats’ Topher Shoults, but four other WG Blue golfers had 41s and 42s ahead of a 44 from Sheridan and 45 from Cole Parker.
