ONONDAGA COUNTY – First place in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division was at stake Wednesday night when the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team squared off with Liverpool.
And led by the duo of Elise Wratney and Georgia Langan, who won two individual races apiece, the Hornets got the best of it, defeating the Warriors 94-78.
The meet started in the 200-yard medley relay when Wratney and Langan, joined by Kate Millson and Laila Duggal, gained a victory in two mi nutes, 2.34 seconds.
Right after, in the 200 freestyle, Wratney’s 2:06.83 edged the 2:07.05 from Liverpool’s Sarah Colwell as, in the 500 freestyle, Wratney pulled away in 5:35.49 to Coldwell’s 5:51.42.
Again, Langan swept the sprints, edging Kaitlyn Thompson, 25.71 seconds to 25.93, in the 50 freestyle before taking first in the 100 freestyle in 56.66, beating the 58.09 from the Warriors’ Arianna Kuznia.
Elsewhere, Kristen Iles swam the 100 butterlfy in 1:09.82, with Millson, in 1:16.63, going 1-2 with Lillian Fowler (1:19.08) in the 100 breaststroke as Gabby Dardis was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.56.
Prior to this, Jamesville-DeWitt competed Tuesday night, hosting Baldwinsville and remained unbeaten, the Red Rams prevailing 96-84 despite the presence of Bees star Eva Smith.
Thearyn Wales challenged Smith in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 2:05.27, not far from Smith’s winning 2:03.86 as she also took the 100 butterfly in 1:03.01 and helped the Bees win the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, too.
But Wales did prevail in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.67, going 1-2 with Emma Paul (1:11.61), and the Rams piled up points in the 50 freestyle as Margaret Lister, in 28.26 seconds, went 1-2-3 with Nora Barnello (28.46) and Cora Bright (28.63).
Other J-D wins came from Kayla McQuaid, unopposed in diving as she earned 235.6 points, and Evelyn Jones, who took the 500 freestyle in 5:53.18. Samantha Wheeler was a close second (1:05.52) to the Bees’ Erin Gruppe (1:03.39) in the 100 freestyle, with Barnello second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:27.94.
Even bigger for McQuaid, though, was what happened Saturday at the Burgos Invitational at Nottingham, where, winning with 456.55 points, she automatically qualified for November’s state championship meet in suburban Rochester.
As F-M dueled with Liverpool, Christian Brothers Academy was facing Oswego/Mexico, and the Brothers had little trouble here, prevailing by a score of 104-79.
Zoe Thayer led CBA, winning on her own in the 200 freestyle in 2:08.74 and also getting first place in the 500 freestyle in 5:46.33 before helping Anna Fuller, Ella Zaryski and Sophia Ciereck take the 400 freestyle relay in 4:06.27.
Earlier, Fuller had taken the 100 backstroke in 1:07.82 to Kayla Ceclia’s 1:14.80, while Jenna Filhan was victorious in the 200 IM in 2:28.34 ahead of Ciereck’s 2:32.68. Filhan, Fuller, Madison Ceclia and Alison Sullivan were first in the 200 medley relay in 2:03.97 to Mexico/Oswego’s 2:05.06.
Close in both sprints, Zaryski went 26.85 seconds in the 50 freestyle to the 26.49 for Mexico/Oswego’s Joscein Coniski, and in the 100 freestyle Zaryski finished in 59.11, just behind Ciarrah Tynan’s 58.60.
Filhan was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.44, but the Brothers dominated the 100 breaststroke as Josie Lachut, in 1:19.11, finished ahead of Alicia Snyder’s 1:22.98 and Madison Ceclia’s 1:23.96.
