CENTRAL NEW YORK – Fresh from a tense 3-2 defeat to unbeaten CBA on Sept. 16, the Skaneateles boys soccer team continued to test itself against top-flight opposition – and again found it tough to get on top.
Henninger, from the Class AAA ranks, was the opposition last Tuesday night at Hyatt Stadium, and it was the Black Knights prevailing 2-1 over the Lakers.
Even with a second-half goal from Lucas Cerimelli, assisted by Andrew Peterscak, Henninger was able to get out in front early and hang on in the late going, leaning on goals from Yor Yal and Deric Bere.
Not until Friday did the Lakers return to action – in its first meeting with rival Marcellus since last November’s Section III Class B final.
Now, as then, Skaneateles was triumphant, blanking the Mustangs 2-0 as the two sides were scoreless until the second half.
In order to break the deadlock, the Lakers needed Max Cerimelli to put in one goal and assist on the other, by David Petercsak, while Sean Kerwick assisted on Cerimelli’s tally and the Skaneateles defense proved superb, holding Marcellus to just two shots.
Solvay, whose lone defeat this season remained a 2-1 decision to Skaneateles on Sept. 12, found its way back to the win column a week later by shutting out Bishop Grimes 2-0.
Taking 12 shots to the Cobras’ one, the Bearcats leaned on Arkadii Ososkalo, who scored once in each half, assists credited to Ole Matyiuk and Justin Zimmerman.
Then the Bearcats met Marcellus Wednesday night, and it was here that the Mustangs emerged again as a serious long-term threat, prevailing by a score of 3-1.
It was Solvay getting on the board with Matyiuk’s first-half goal. And it stayed 1-0 until the second half, where in a single swoop Marcellus tied it, moved out in front and added a cushion.
James Cox, Bob Moses and Connor Ciota earned those three Mustangs goals, with Austin Raicht and Mathias Farrara picking up assists. Solvay goalie Redd Long finished with six saves.
Solvay recovered well, though, routing Camden 5-0 on Friday with goals from five different players – Matyiuk, Arkadii Ososkalo, Josh Chipman, Kevin Alonso Machado and Shahab Kassim, with Sam Chipman adding an assist.
