ONONDAGA COUNTY – On consecutive nights, the Skaneateles and West Genesee girls swim teams would each have battles against traditional powers and take defeats.
In the Lakers’ case, that meant facing Liverpool, a side who constantly relied on its depth to prevail by a score of 92-78 Tuesday night at the Community Center.
But it started well for Skaneateles, who saw Olivia Springer, Sophia Soprano, Arianna Matthews and Ana Nichols go two minutes, 7.99 seconds to pull away from Liverpool (2:16.63) in the 200-yard medley relay.
Matthews would win the 100 butterfly in a clocking of 1:06.39 and then, in the 500 freestyle, post 5:39.27 to outlast the 5:49.86 from the Warriors’ Sarah Colwell.
A close 100 breaststroke had Soprano, in 1:22.11, edge Ruby Brown (1:23.28), but Liverpool got two wins apiece from Arianna Kuznia (200 individual medley, 2:34.39, and 100 freestyle, 58.96 seconds), and Kaitlyn Thompson, who went 26.32 in the 50 freestyle and 1:06.08 in the 100 backstroke.
Soprano took second in the 200 IM in 2:41.33 Maya Drotar got second in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.76 as Springer was second (1:00.52) in the 100 freestyle and Phoebe Bedard had 199.95 points for second place in diving.
In a tight 200 freestyle relay, Matthews, Nichols, Drotar and Soprano had a time of 1:50.58, but it was a close second as Liverpool won it in 1:50.33.
When West Genesee had its turn at Jamesville-DeWitt on Wednesday night, the Wildcats fell to the Red Rams 95-86, though it did have some individual standouts.
Maddie Owczarzak was victorious in the 50 freestyle in 27.02 seconds, nearly two full seconds ahead of anyone else, and in the 100 freestyle her 58.84 was just behind the 57.72 from J-D’s Margaret Lister.
Makayla Dunham had WG’s other individual title, going 1:22.73 in the 100 breaststroke ahead of Helena Sofisnki’s 1:23.97, with Rachel Hahn, Maddie Owzcarzak, Josie Owczarzak nad Lena Kent winning the 200 freestyle relay in 2:02.17.
Lily Mauro picked up 218.2 points in diving, second to the 254.75 from J-D star Kayla McQuaid. Kent got second in the 100 butterfly as Maddie Owczarzak, Kelly McManus, Allie Ivery and Camille Bohli had a close second (2:12.43) to the Rams (2:10.49) in the 200 medley relay.
