CENTRAL NEW YORK – Each of the girls swim teams at Fayetteville-Manlius, Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt would find success in this week’s meets.
When F-M faced Syracuse City Tuesday night, it proved another impressive victory for the Hornets, who claimed it by a 97-68 margin ahead of a key showdown this week with Liverpool.
Eliza Smith prevailed twice, going two minutes, 42.76 seconds to edge teammate Maeve Kelly (2:44.82) in the 200 individual medley and then winning the 100 butterfly in 1:15.88.
A close 200 freestyle had Georgia Langan, in 2:08.62, finish just ahead of Elise Wratney’s 2:08.77, but no one caught Wratney in the 100 breaststroke, where she prevailed in 1:13.70.
Kristen Iles was first in the 50 freestyle in 27.86 seconds, Kate Millson going 1:00.14 to win the 100 freestyle over Lilian Fowler (1:02.66) and Kristen Iles claiming the 500 freestyle in 6:07.32 to Kelly Liu’s 6:10.88. Fowler, Wratney, Langan and Meghan Iles swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.26.
That same night, CBA went to Baldwinsville and steadily worked its way to a 53-40 victory over the Bees.
Anna Fuller, Jenna Filhan, Madison Ceclia and Ella Zaryski got it going with a 2:05.28 in the 200 medley relay. This was before Ceclia (1:05.70) edged Filhan (1:06.14) in the 100 butterfly.
Zaryski, second in the 50 freestyle in 26.43 seconds, got a 100 freestyle win in 57.76 before Sophia Ciereck won the 500 freestyle in 6:00.80. B’ville standout Eva Smith tore to a time of 58.47 in the 100 backstroke.
J-D, who would host B’ville early this week, welcomed West Genesee Wednesday night and, completing a local sweep of the week, defeated the Wildcats 95-86.
Thearyn Wales impressed with a pair of wins, going 5:36.87 to dominate the 500 freestyle after she swam the 200 IM in 2:28.80, with Nora Barnello second in the latter event.
Margaret Lister went from beating Cora Bright 2:08.45 to 2:15.16 in the 200 freestyle to a close 100 freestyle where, in 58.72 seconds, she held off the 58.84 from WG’s Maddie Owczarzak.
Kayla McQuaid’s 254.75 poins in diving provided another first-place finish as Maria Fisher was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:12.55 and Bright beat Evelyn Jones, 1:10.10 to 1:12.38, in the 100 backstroke.
Of the three relays, J-D had its top showing in the 200 medley as Wales, Jones, Helena Sofinski and Katherlne Saluti won in 2:10.49 to hold off WG’s 2:12.43.
Swimming again on Saturday against New Hartford, J-D pulled out a 95-91 victory owith a string of second and third-place finishes to negate the Spartans claiming most of the individual events.
McQuaid still won in diving, her 248.95 points well clear of New Hartford’s Lilian Mulcahy (205.10), while Wales would beat the field in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.27 and got second in the 100 freestyle in 58.33 seconds.
Lister was second in the 200 IM in 2:31.70 and second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.51, with Bright second in the 200 freestyle (2:18.22), Jones second in the 50 freestyle (27.23 seconds) and Sofia Koenig second in the 500 freestyle.
And though the Spartans swept first place in all the relays, J-D had Wales, Lister, Jones and Maria Fisher go 2:02.20 in the 200 medley behind New Hartford’s swift 1:59.69. Bright, Lister, Jones and Fisher went 1:51.43 in the 200 freestyle relay as Wales, Barnello, Bright and Samantha Wheeler swam the 400 freestyle relay in 4:10.81.
