CENTRAL NEW YORK – With bragging rights in its main rivalry over Cicero-North Syracuse maintained, the Liverpool girls swim team could concentrate on going after regular-season league honors.
The Warriors moved to 3-0 on the season at Skaneateles Tuesday night as Arianna Kuznia and Kaitlyn Thompson led the way to beat the Lakers 92-78.
Kuznia’s first-place time of two minutes, 34.39 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley only began a night where she would also 58.96 seconds to hold off Sknaeateles’ Olivia Springer (1:00.52) in the 100 freestyle.
Thompson (26.32 seconds) and Elizabeth Manley (27.76) went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle before a 100 backstroke where Thompson would win in 1:06.08, with Abbigail Lane second.
Sarah Colwell won the 200 freestyle in 2:08.63 and was second (5:49.86) to Lakers star Arianna Matthews (5:39.27) in the 500 freestyle, while Natalie Thompson was second in the 100 butterlfy in 1:12.05.
With 205.25 points, June Pioroeski edged the Lakers’ Phoebe Bedard (199.95) in diving, while in the 200 freestyle relay Kuznia, Colwell and the Thompsons went 1:50.33, just ahead of Skaneateles’ 1:50.88.
As for C-NS, it met Oswego a night later and also found its way to the win column, earning a 101-80 victory over the Buccaneers.
There were several close races, none more so than the 100 butterfly, where C-NS’s Leah Benedict and Oswego’s Joscein Coniski both managed to finish in 1:03.65.
But Benedict did claim a solo first in the 50 freestyle in 26.77 seconds to 27.05 for teammate Rose Coleman, who also was second (1:02.26) in the 100 freestyle to Kate Gucciardi’s winning 1:00.08.
It was Kate Gucciardi, in the 200 freestyle, beating Coniski, 2:10.07 to 2:10.90, while Molly Gucciardi went 2:32.04 in the 200 IM before winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.58 to Addison Vavra’s 1:26.03 and Miranda Lenning’s 1:26.40.
A close diving event had Sophia Sugrue finish with 210.3 points to 205.4 for the Bucs’ Chelsea Hitzschke, with Cassidy Payrot winning the 100 backstroke in 1:08.82 to Eva Lawrence’s 1:09.43.
Payrot, Coleman, Benedict and Kate Gucciardi were victorious in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.62, this following a 200 medley relay where Molly Gucciadri joined Kate, plus Benedict and Payrot, to win in 2:02.90.
C-NS meets West Genesee next Thursday at Nottingham, a day after a big showdown between Liverpool and visiting Fayetteville-Manlius that could determine first place in the SCAC Metro division.
