ONONDAGA COUNTY – Each of the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls tennis teams gladly welcomed cooler temperatures and better playing conditions for last week’s tough slate of league matches.
C-NS challenged Baldwinsville last Wednesday afternoon, but could not get on the scoreboard, taking a 7-0 defeat to the Bees.
Madelyn Shaw had the closest of the three singles matches, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Alya Kalfass as Meghan Obleman and Calista Nguyen also lost in two sets.
Lily Misco and Megan Meives battled in doubles, but lost to Sonia Nadzan and Lainey Nesbitt 6-4, 6-2. The teams of Mackenzie Prentice-Lauren Malec, Andrea Iqbal-Jaila Killingbeck and Maddie Frisch-Addyson Fedele also lost in straight sets.
A day later, though, it was C-NS victorious 5-2 over Oswego, helped by a doubles sweep.
The teams of Mieves-Misco, Killingbeck-Iqbal and Fedele-Frisch each won in two set, but it required three sets and a comeback for Prentice and Malec to get past Amanda Connelly and Margaret O’Leary 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Though the Buccaneers won two of the three singles matches, Nguyen countered. Down a set and facing a tie-breaker, to Sophia Cahill Nguyen stayed alive and then prevailed 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
Back on Monday, it was Liverpool against West Genesee, and the Warriors dropped a 4-3 decision to the Wildcats, all of it stemming from doubles.
Angelica Underwood began a singles sweep 6-1, 6-0 over Helena Allen. By those exact same scores, Olivia Magnarelli beat Kailyn Drury as Allie Kerneklian handled Ava Amodio 6-0, 6-3.
However, WG took all four doubles matches in two sets. In the closest of them, Christy Bui and Angela Morgans still had a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Angelina Allen and Calina Olson.
Then it was the Warriors challenging unbeaten Fayetteville-Manlius and taking a 6-1 defeat. Underwood prevailed 6-1, 6-3 over Trisha Adavikolanu, but the Hornets won the rest of the matches in two sets, the closest in doubles a 6-0, 6-3 loss by Magnarelli and Kernekian to Lindsey Chong and Sadie Toole.
Liverpool lost a 4-3 non-league match to East Syracuse Minoa on Thursday afternoon. Again, the singles players were strong, Underwood beating Brooke Kirkpatrick 6-2, 6-0 as Magnarelli handled Erin Murnane 6-0, 6-2 and Kernekian turned back Rhiannon Cobb 7-5, 6-1.
ESM, though, won all the doubles points in two sets, including first doubles, where Sophie Jones and Caroline Sitnik extended the second set, but lost to Sophie Jones and Caroline Sitnik 6-1, 7-5.
