CICERO – Both on an individual and team basis, boys track and field athletes from West Genesee impressed as part of a large local contingent in Thursday’s Section III state qualifying meet at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.
In particular, Wildcats senior Kev Scott continued to dominate sprints, pulling away to win the 100-meter dash in 10.69 seconds after he, along with Dom Burris, Dylan Frost and Chris Moser, broke their own school record with a time of 42.71 that was nearly a full second ahead of the field.
As if that wasn’t enough, Moser advanced to the state meet by winning the 200-meter dash in 22.47 seconds after he took fourth in the 400 in 50.58. Burris was fourth in the 200 in 22.85 and fifth in the long jump, going 21 feet 3 ½ inches.
Peter McMahon went 9:34.24 for second place in the 3,200-meter run and had a strong 1,600-meter run, finishing third in 4:31.28, while Logan Scott took third in the 400 hurdles in 57.99 seconds.
Over in the girls sectional state qualifier, Skaneateles senior Kyla Palmer won two sprints and nearly a third, and Maddie Wright prevailed in the high jump.
In the 400, Palmer’s 57.12 seconds held off New York Mills’ Arianna McClendon (57.55) before she took the 200 in 25.34, more than half a second ahead of the field. And this came after Palmer went 12.46 in the 100 to finish runner-up to South Jeffersons’ Kennady Billman (12.28).
Wright got her victory and spot in the state meet by clearing 5’2” in the high jump with fewer misses than Pulaski’s Vanessa Trumble. Skaneateles also had Alice Spaulding throw the discus 93’10” for fifth place. Skaneateles’ 4×800 relay side got eighth place in 10:45.92.
West Genesee’s girls included Claire Griffin, Zoe Maupin, Andrea Conklin and Chloe Fietze going 9:54.42 in the 4×800 relay for third place.
Trinity Brumfield, Riley Flynn, Anna Nelson and Mya Rufus were fourth in the 4×100 in 51.22 seconds and the Wildcats fifth (4:14.55) in the 4×400. Rufus took sixth in both the 100 and 200 sprints.
Westhill got a top-three sweep in the girls 100-meter hurdles, where Kate Bendall won in 15.87 seconds, edging Emma Murphy’s 15.95 as Ava Baty was third in 16.46.
Later, in the 400 hurdles, Ashley Bolesh won in 1:02.37, with Isabel Young fourth (1:10.19). Jules Bleskoski was third in the Division II 1,500-meter run in 5:10.54, with Mallie Alt fourth in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet.
On the boys side for Skaneateles, Max Paciorek earned third place in the Division II pentathlon with 2,997 points, with the Lakers eighth in the 4×100 in 45.59 seconds, just behind Westhill’s seventh-place 45.58.
Will Feeney threw the discus 142’8” to grab third place as he was fifth (44 feet) in the shot put. Jack Phillips ran to fifth in the 400 sprint in 51.81 seconds.
Westhill’s boys had Owen Mulholland, Julian Curtis, Bohdan Centore and Drew O’Reilly take second in the 4×800 relay in 8:23.62 to Indian River’s 8:18.20.
O’Reilly got second among Division II runners in the 3,200 in 9:57.68, while Mulholland also was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 58.47 seconds, with Carter Buckman seventh
Marcellus saw Bailey Ellis throw the shot put 33’3” for second place in Division II as Westhill’s Jael Hill was third with 32’4 1/2” and Solvay had Emily Rolince sixth with 31’4 1/4” to go with an eighth in the discus. The Mustangs’ Anella Bolster finished eighth in the long jump.
The Mustangs had its 4×400 relay team get fifth place in Division II in 3:36.86 on the boys side and sixth (4:20.11) on the girls side, Andrew McCaffrey taking eighth place (11 feet) in the boys pole vault.
