CANASTOTA – Three area track and field teams battled for top honors Thursday during the Section III Class B-2 championships at Canastota, with the Skaneateles girls and Marcellus boys each recording second-place finishes.
In both instances, they trailed Cazenovia, who claimed the top spots ahead of the Skaneateles girls’ total of 79 points and the Marcellus boys earning 96 points two spots ahead of Skaneateles in fourth place as Solvay finished sixth.
Again dominating in girls sprints, Skaneateles senior Kyla Palmer beat the field in the 100-meter dash in 12.65 seconds, also taking the 200-meter dash in 25.27, more than a full second ahead of the field as Solvay’s Kyira Davis (28.17) was fifth. Palmer, Maddie Wright, Alice Spaulding and Gianna Caraccio were second in the 4×400 relay in 4:10.80 to Cazenovia’s 4:08.43.
In the 3,000-meter run, Tobi DiRubbo pulled away to win in 11:10.20 as Marcellus had Sophia Maum third in 11:37.82, while Maddie Wright took the high jump by clearing 5 feet 3 inches, well clear of the 4’10” from Marcellus’ Lorelai Riefler.
Lucy Fleckenstein got second (5:02.69) and DiRubbo third (5:04.93) in the 1,500-meter run, Fleckenstein adding a third in the 800 in 2:29.34 to edge Marcellus’ Corrine Aldrich (2:29.41) in fourth place. Spaulding finished seventh in the pole vault, clearing 8’3″.
Marcellus, who was fifth in the girls team event, had Bailey Ellis throw the shot put 33’9 1/2″ to win over Solvay’s Emily Rolince (32’4″) in second place, but it was Rolince taking the discus with 97’2″ to the 95’4″ by Skaneateles’ Alice Spaulding.
Emmi Rossiter go 1:03.93 in the 400-meter dash for fourth place and help the Mustangs take third in the 4×400 in 4:26.87, with Anella Bolster fourth in the triple jump by going 31’5″.
Sophia Bianchi finished fifth in the 100 hurdles, Bolster fifth in the long jump and Maum sixth in the 1,500 as the Mustangs got fourth in the 4×100 relay in 54 seconds flat ahead of Skaneateles’ fifth-place 54.23.
Over in the boys meet, Marcellus got most of its points from field events such as the pole vault, where Andrew McCaffrey topped 11 feet to beat the 10’6″ from Cazenovia’s Killian Blouin, or the discus, where Charles Donahue was third (111’8″), Scott Hall fourth (109’9″) and Cameron Sadler fifth (107’2″).
Moving to the triple jump, Paul Swenson finished second for the Mustangs, going 40′ 1/2″, while Evan Fullagar had a third-place long jump of 18’10 3/4″ and was fourth (39’1″) in the triple jump behind Swenson.
On the track, the Mustangs’ best finish was in the 4×400, where McCaffrey, Joe Striffler, Paul Swenson and Nolan Manahan got second place in 3:34.71, edged by Cazenovia’s winning 3:34.59. Striffler also was sixth in the 400-meter dash as Kieran Capozzi took third in the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:14.46, with Kolton Finarty sixth.
McCaffrey was also fourth in the 100 sprint in 11.90 seconds as Owen Alexander took second in the 110 hurdles in 17.16, with Lukas Grieb fourth in 17.83 to go with a fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:05.52. Liam Eldridge got sixth in the 3,200-meter run.
Skaneateles, though, got a tremendous performance from Max Paciorek in the pentathlon, his total of 2,854 points. with first-place finishes in three of the five events (110 hurdles, high jump, long jump) nearly 800 ahead of a field that included Solvay’s Jairo DeJesus in fourth place and Marcellus’ Ay-Zoh Shaw in sixth place.
Will Feeney stepped up in the throwing events, his shot put of 49’6 1/4″ beating the 42’5″ from Marcellus’ Nolan Hoey and 40’1″ from Solvay’s Dylan Mumford, with the Mustangs’ Scott Hall fifth at 39 feet. Then, in the discus, Feeney’s 129 feet went 1-2 with the 122’7″ from teammate Henry Thompson.
In the 400 sprints, Jack Phillips was second in 52.35 seconds to Cazenovia’s Dan Raymond (52.07). Phillips also helped P.J. Kennedy, Graham Braadley and Zach Cerimeli finish second in the 4×100 in 45.86 to Clinton’s 45.68, with Marcellus third in 45.95 and Solvay (46.83) in fourth place.
Ryan McCrone, clearing 9’6″, was fourth in the pole vault behind McCaffrey. The Lakers were fourth in the 4×800 as Tritan Boucher and Aidan Ward were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 800.
Solvay’s Aidan Galvin got second in the 100 sprint in 11.80 seconds and second in the 200 in 23.45, just behind Clinton’s Cameron Maline (23.37) as Phillips was third in 24.18 for Skaneateles. Luis Mojica had a sixth-place high jump of 5’4″.
