CENTRAL NEW YORK -All of the area’s high school boys lacrosse teams will imagine themselves as quite capable of making their way to Section III championships once the post-season starts this week.
Jamesville-DeWitt enters as the top seed in Class C, having routed Fayetteville-Manlius 15-7 in last Saturday’s regular-season finale.
The Red Rams jumped out 5-0 in the first quarter and never got caught, led by Mario Streiff’s four goals and three-goal hat tricks from Lucas Patchen and Sam Brazell. Graham Kesserling and Andrew Laubenstein each had two goals as Rob Madden led the Hornets with three goals and three assists, Sean Kellish and John Angelicola each converting twice.
Despite this loss, F-M is still the no. 2 seed in Class B and would meet Central Square in one quarterfinal Wednesday as Christian Brothers Academy, the no. 4 seed, met East Syracuse Minoa, the no. 5 seed, at Alibrandi Stadium to see who would advance to Friday’s semifinal against top seed West Genesee.
CBA had the strongest finish to the regular season. The Brothers defeated Jordan-Elbridge 12-3 last Tuesday night, getting away in the second quarter when it outscored the Eagles 5-0, with Andrew Kohlbrenner and Joe Papa again at the forefront.
Kohlbrenner scored four times, with Papa getting three goals and two assists. Ben Paul, Jack Ludington, Ty Green and Ben Anderson each found the net, too, with Matt Craybas stopping 11 of the 14 shots he faced.
CBA was impressive again last Thursday defeating Cazenovia 14-5, again getting great work from its defense, which held two Lakers stars, Brandon Barnard and D.B. Falge, without a goal.
Craybas recorded 11 saves and saw, in front of him, Kohlbrenner, with five goals and two assists, equal the entire Cazenovia roster. Papa added three goals and two assists, with Ludington and Jack Wichmann each converting twice and Wichmann adding two assists.
Going head-to-head last Thursday night, F-M and ESM engaged in a tense, exciting battle, but the Hornets were able to rally and beat the Spartans 11-10.
ESM jumped out 4-1 in the first quarter, only to have F-M storm back and dominate the rest of the half to lead 6-5 at the break before the Spartans’ defense settled down, only allowing a single goal in the third period.
Despite this, the Hornets, trailing 8-7, pulled ahead in the final minutes thanks to four goals from Madden as Kellish scored twice, single goals going to Angelicola, Kyle Freyer, Jack Hearn and George LaCombe.
In defeat, ESM goalie Luke James made 15 saves. In front of him, Cayden Claflin scored three times, with Mike Santillo and Evan deBerjeois each getting two goals. Noah Taylor, Logan Welch and Dan Abreu had single goals.
Before this, F-M had to deal with reigning state Class A champion Baldwinsville last Tuesday night and put up a good fight, even as it lost to the Bees 12-8.
Having taken a 14-4 defeat April 11 in the game where senior T.J. Conley was injured, F-M saw it getting away again in the rematch as it trailed B’ville 8-3 at halftime.
Battling back late, the Hornets made up some ground, yet not enough as the Bees got three goals from Brady Garcia and two-goal outings from Keegan Lynch, Carson Dyl and Ryan Quinn. Nick Cary made 10 saves.
J-D was close against another Class A side, Liverpool, but took a 10-9 defeat as it was outscored 3-1 in the second quarter after a 2-2 first-quarter tie.
]hey stayed on relatively even terms the rest of the way, J-D inching within one in the late going, but Liverpool surviving helped by 13 saves from Owen Salanger, two more than Rams counterpart Ian McIntyre.
Carrying most of Liverpool’s attack, Dom Osbeck scored four times and Aaron Clouthier got three goals plus a pair of assists as Aidan Bates got three goals for J-D.
