CENTRAL NEW YORK – Continuing to dominate its regular-season matches, the Marcellus boys golf team rolled past Pulaski 218-287 last Thursday afternoon at Sunset Ridge.
Will Glass led the Mustangs, shooting 40 for nine holes. John Williams put up a 42, while Ben Reome got a 43. Elliot Austin’s 46 was just ahead of 47s by Pat Louer and Landon Kelly.
Bishop Ludden played last Monday against Bishop Grimes and handled the Cobras 211-274, with Phil McGarvey shooting a 38 for the Gaelic Knights ahead of a 40 by Steve Hall. Max Boyea shot 42, Nick Brunger had a 44 and Matt Knechtle finished at 47.
Moving to girls golf, the big event was Wednesday’s Richad Winstead Onondaga High School League tournament at Woodcrest where Marcellus, Skaneateles and Westhill all took part.
With a team total of 448, the Mustangs were second only to Christian Brothers Academy’s winning 361, as the Lakers finished fourth at 485. Cazenovia finished third.
Individually, Marcellus’ Allison Coombs shot an 18-hole aggregate of 97 to finish fifth, with teammates Sofia Tufenkjian and Genevieve Formoza both finishing at 113.
Ella Arroyo’s 118 tied for 13th and led Skaneateles, just ahead of a 121 from Chloe Corbett and 122 from Paige Posecznick. Cate Gunderson added a 124, which Westhill’s Samantha Burkett equaled ahead of Isabella Formoza’s 125.
Before this, Marcellus beat Skaneateles 233-265 in a head-to-head match last Monday at Tuscarora, with Coombs shooting 52 to top a 58 from Genevieve Formoza.
Claire Curtin (61) beat out Sofia Tufenkjian (62) for third place, but they each were in front of the low Lakers round of 64 from Addie Ziegler as Corbett had a 66, Arroyo a 67 and Cate Gunderson a 68.
Then, in last Tuesday’s 203-240 win over Manlius Pebble Hill, Marcellus got a 46 from Coombs behind the Trojans’ Amitees Fazeli and her 41, but Coombs had company from 52s by Genevieve and Isabella Foromoza, plus a 53 from Curtin.
West Genesee, who competes Tuesday in its sectional tournament at Rogues Roost, won a tight match against Liverpool a week earlier at Westvale.
The Wildcats’ 208-211 decision saw Sophia Simiele shoot a 46, four shots better than Liverpool’s best rounds of 50 from Emma Fenwick and Maddie Turck. Then Allison Lamberton finished fourth with a 52 as Olivia Snyder shot a 60, one ahead of Allison Shortslef, Gianna Corbin and Ava Brown.
WG played again on Wednesday and prevailed 201-232 over Cicero-North Syracuse Green. Simiele’s 44 was part of a top-four sweep as Lamberton improved to a 50 and Mia Barbuto added a 52, with Madalyn Lauricella getting a 55.
