ONONDAGA COUNTY – An entire season of girls golf for Cicero-North Syracuse Blue hinged on how it would do in its three important contests of the spring, two of which came lat week before this Tuesday’s Section III championships.
First came the regular-season SCAC Metro division championship showdowns with Fayetteville-Manlius Green – two of them, over the course of three days.
In the first encounter last Tuesday at Green Lakes, the Northstars, led by Isabella Borte and Jessica Ricciardi, prevailed in a tight 183-187 match.
Over nine holes in windy conditions, Borte and Ricciardi both shot 42, which was three shots ahead of the best two Hornets rounds from Bella Fullmer and Elizabeth Noel.
Just as important was Natalie Hacker shooting her own 45 to tie Fullmer and Noel for third, while Chloe Tice managed a 48 amid four different F-M Green rounds between 46 and 49 from Gabby Dardis, Alana Isley, Erin Graves and Lindsey Chong.
Then came Thursday’s rematch at Lakeshore Country Club, one where Borte made up for most of the winning margin by herself as, again, C-NS Blue beat F-M Green, this time 182-191.
Borte’s 40 was the low round by five strokes over Ricciardi’s 45, and each of them were ahead of 47s by Isley, Dardis and Dong, which Tice matched. Lindsay Kubala’s 50 then clinched another Northstars victory.
To cap off this undefeated regular season, C-NS Blue moved to 12-0 with a 181-218 victory over Baldwinsville at Lakeshore.
Borte, shooting a 40, was part of a top-four Northstars sweep. Andrea Wheaton got second place with a 46, beating out Hacker’s 47 and Tice’s 48 ahead of the low Bees round of 50 by Reagan Doan.
As that went on, C-NS Green lost, 190-235, to F-M’s younger White squad at Beaumont. Jillian Bambino shot 55 and Lauren Sisk’s 57 beat Katie Bouziden (61) and Grace Didrio (62), but four Hornets topped that total, led by Georgia Perry and Claire Zerrillo, who both shot 46.
Liverpool had another close match last Monday against West Genesee, only to take a 208-211 defeat to the Wildcats.
Emma Fenwick and Maddie Turck both shot 50 at Westvale, tied for second behind the 46 from WG’s Sophia Simiele. That ultimately made the difference as Ella Foriero added a 53 and Melanie Biviano a 56, but the Wildcats held on with a 52 from Allison Lamberton helped by Alyssa Henderson’s 59 and Olivia Snyder’s 60.
Playing again on Wednesday, C-NS Green fell to West Genesee 201-232. Melanie Dolson’s 56 beat out a 57 from Bouziden and a 58 from Sisk, with Simiele’s 44 pacing the Wildcats.
