UTICA – Area high school boys tennis teams would prosper in three different Section III tournaments held last week in Utica, with Jamesville-DeWitt going to the top of the Class B ranks and Fayetteville-Manlius doing the same in Class A.
The Red Rams swept both doubles titles in Class B, starting in first doubles where Luke Cantone and Shreyank Bhatt waged an epic final with Oneida’s Andrew Hicks and Spencer Igmire, but ultimately won it 7-6, 5-7, 6-3.
Also, in second doubles, J-D’s team of Carson Souser and Will Sharlow prevailed, not dropping a game in either of its two matches leading up to the final and then, once there, topping New Hartford’s Ken Kowalczyk and Arda Sencicek in a pair of 6-1 sets.
Up in first singles, Mark Bratslavsky had to twice win in three sets, getting past Shay Smyth (Whitesboro) 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the quartefinals and then, in the championship round, edging New Hartford’s David Fenner 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Anthony Fico reached the second singles final before a 6-4, 6-0 defeat to New Hartford’s Evan Lyga Dean Bratslavsky lost a three-set battle to Chittenango’s Seth Boulter.
Three local teams were in Class A, but F-M led the pack as Colin Byer, in third singles, made it to the finals without losing a set and then rallied in the title match to beat Baldwinsville’s Aiden Delaney 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Over in first doubles, Gene Balian and Dan Manta were victorious, facing Auburn’s Michael Clark and Riley Fitzgerald in the finals and, like Byer, coming from behind to take it in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Completing the doubles sweep, Justin Dunn and Kaelem Michel, in second doubles, did not drop a set in any of their three matches, beating B’ville’s Connor Tutor and Leonardo Vona in the finals 6-0, 6-4.
Cameron Lukasik reached the first singles final before a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) loss to Liverpool’s Justin Barrett.
Christian Brothers Academy got a win from Gabriel Yang in second singles. Yang beat F-M’s Xavier Sui 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the semifinals, then went to three sets again to top Cicero-North Syracuse’s Brady Petranchuk 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 as Sui went on to finish third.
Caleb Buddie and Finn Doyle were third in second doubles, taking a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 consolation match over C-NS’s Peter Gill and Andrew Geroge.
Chanu Yang lost in first singles quarterfinals to Lukasik 6-1, 6-1, with Hunter Szatkowski dropping his third singles quarterfinal to Byer 6-3, 6-4. The doubles team of Soren Kang and Will Vandermeer also fell in the quarterfinals.
East Syracuse Minoa had Noah Satterlee in singles, where he fell in the quarterfinals to Sui, while Josh Spilka and Jayce Domres lost in the first doubles quarterfinal to Clark and Fitzgerald and, in third doubles, Jacob Sehn and Donovan Randall also reached the quarterfinals before a defeat to Dunn and Michel.
In Class C-1, Manlius Pebble Hill had Alex Fung reach the second singles final before a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Cazenovia’s Garret Lounsbury as Andy and Sam Lurvey, one game from victory in the second doubles final, fell just short in a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 loss to Ethan Camp and Cy Laurie.
Jaasim Zaman finish third in first singles, while Jon Howard lost in the opening round. Abe Salomon and Devin Trikka lost in the first doubles quarterfinals.
