CORTLAND – With a presence in each of the five divisions, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team had a solid showing in Wednesday’s Section III Class A tournament at SUNY-Cortland.
Aidan Delaney contended in third singles. He beat Eh Tha Me Shee (Utica Proctor) 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and routed Brody Wagner (Auburn) 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Then, in the championship round against Fayetteville-Manlius’ Colin Byer, Delaney won the first set 6-4, only to have Byer take the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2 to pull it out.
Connor Tutor and Leonardo Vona were the top seed in second doubles. They shut out Malte Alberts and Niklas Olchwer (Rome Free Academy) 6-0, 6-0 and then got past CBA’s Caleb Buddie and Finn Doyle 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.
However, Tutor and Vona ran right into Fayetteville-Manlius’ Justin Dunn and Kaelem Michel in the finals, and lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.
In second doubles, Andrew Jung and Nick Helwig would finish third. They won in straight sets over a pair from Syracuse City to reach the semifinals and led early against F-M’s Dan Manta and Gene Balian before taking a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 defeat.
As it turned out, the consolation match also required three sets, Jung and Helwig one game from defeat but making it all the way back to beat Cicero-North Syracuse’s Ryan Keil and Matt Jordan 2-6, 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
Mason Doan played first singles, beating Duncan Baker (Oswego) 6-2, 6-1 before a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) semifinal defeat to Liverpool’s Justin Barrett, the eventual champion. But Doan recovered to take third when, against C-NS’s Wyatt Dupell, he prevailed 7-5, 6-2.
Zach Treichler, playing second singles, lost a tough quarterfinal 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, to CBA’s Gabriel Yang, who went on to take the title in three sets over C-NS’s Brady Petranchuk.
In all, five B’ville players – Doan, plus the doubles teams of Helbig-Jung and Tutor-Vona, advanced to the sectional state qualifier, set for next Thursday at Oneida High School.
